The Puerto Rican rapper born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio has had a year. He won Album of the Year at this year’s Grammys for Debí Tirar Más Fotos — the first time an album sung entirely in Spanish took home that award. He headlined the Super Bowl halftime show in February, where he brought out Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin and made Trumps’s head spin and right-wing groups spiral. I knew there was another reason why I loved him so. He was also named Spotify’s most-streamed artist for the fourth year in a row.
His queer fans are not surprised by any of it.
Bad Bunny has been a vocal ally for years. In 2020, he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon wearing a shirt that read in Spanish “They killed Alexa, not a man in a skirt” — a tribute to Alexa Negrón Luciano, a trans woman murdered in Puerto Rico, and a direct rebuke of media that misgendered her. He told Rolling Stone he wore it because he felt “a big commitment to the trans community.” That same year he dressed in full drag for his “Yo Perreo Sola” music video. He said he did it to “show support to those who need it.” GLAAD gave him its Vanguard Award.
He told the LA Times in 2020 that his sexuality “does not define me,” adding: “At the end of the day, I don’t know if in 20 years I will like a man. One never knows in life.” West Hollywood has always had a thing for him. Any wonder why?
