Block by Block Ambassadors Bid Farewell to West Hollywood

At Monday nights Public Safety Commission the ‘Block by Block’ Security Ambassadors gave its final report.   Earlier this year the City of West Hollywood pulled the contract with ‘Block by Block’ and awarded the new multi-million dollar contract to Allied Universal.   https://wehoonline.com/allied-universal-take-west-hollywoods-security-ambassadors-program-starting-october-1/

No formal reasons or explanation was given for the switch of contracted service providers.   Block by Block was a long term partner with the City of West Hollywood.  The process played out behind public view.   City staff conducted an RFP process for the West Hollywood security ambassador program and a pre-selected committee interviewed the applicants and selected the new company.

Residents use to texting the Block by Block program will be disappointed.   The change did not include a continuance of the programs text message phone number.  WEHO-BBB (833-934-6222) will no longer be available.  Over the years the City of West Hollywood spent a considerable amount of money to build the BBB Block by Block brand and phone that was embedded into many residents and business phones.

Public commenter David Eckert spoke to the quick change among the city’s service providers for the security ambassador program: “I’ve never really heard what the reason is that Block by Block has changed over, and why we are going with the new company – I’ve looked and can’t really find any information on that,  and I was concerned why,  if we are such a progressive city why aren’t we paying people what they are worth, why are we lowering the hourly rate is going to be for new Allied/ Block by Block system”.

The new contract with Allied Universal provided no wage protections or job security to the former Block by Block organization.   Ambassadors were noticed in a formal mass termination letter as required by law. https://wehoonline.com/copy-notice-mass-termination-letter-block-block-staff/

Stephanie Harker also spoke during the public comment period:  “I haven’t read up about why we are changing companies but, one thing I did remember reading was that the new company was the lowest bidder.   I just have trouble handing our safety over to the lowest bidder.”   “I hope we can be noticed better about the new phone number.   We have WehoTV, channel 10, you can watch it online,  and yet what are we showing constantly on channel 10? the 40th anniversary party, ad nauseam,   It’s the perfect place to at least get it out to everybody who has cable.   So please please, help us out here in communityland to find out what these numbers are and what transpired”.

Erica Leon, general manager of Block by Block, addressed the commission and public with personal comments at the end of the business at hand.

“I just wanted to take a second to thank the City of West Hollywood on behalf of Block by Block for allowing us to serve the community for as long as we did.    We are forever grateful for the opportunity to serve in this community. ”

“There is no city like West Hollywood.   I know a lot of you might not think so but this city the gives the community such a platform for you to have your voices heard.   I’ve never worked at a city that does that,  that listens to you so closely and takes to heart what you have to say, your feedback, whats important to you and acts favorably to care what you have to say.   So, its a really special city and I am forever grateful to have been a part of it.”

I fail to understand how security guards on the street are a better option than police foot patrols. Someone please explain it to me. We need gunwielding foot patrols to keep hood-ass people from wiling out in our town.

Residents and EMPLOYEES are screwed. 21.86 for ambassador, 22.80 for a team lead, 23.50 for a supervisor. Do you really think that those employees will work hard for that amount of money? Cmon. But of course, Danny, Erica, David Aguilar… all happy. How is that possible? We know how.
