8:45 am. Santa Monica Blvd. closed to westbound traffic being diverted north @ Hancock.
A bicyclist was stuck this morning on the westbound lanes along Santa Monica Blvd. Roads were damp due to a light rain earlier in the morning.
Details are unknown but it appears the white car in the photo was making a left turn on to Hancock Drive when the accident occurred.

I used to ride my bicycle daily in West Hollywood, but I got doored twice (where a driver swings their car door open without checking for bicycles. Because of the way that WeHo’s bicycle lanes are designed the car doors open directly into the bike lane.) I got lightly hit by a car once. And suffered cuts and bruises on my hand from a car door. Since those incidents. I no longer ride my bicycle to work. West Hollywood is way too dangerous for bike riders. It reminds me of how the City used to be before they fixed the… Read more »
Based on the info provided here there is a good chance the bicyclist is at fault.
“The white car in the photo was making a left turn” right into the cyclist and it’s all his fault, really❓
This just goes to show that Santa Monica Blvd would benefit a great deal by a redesign “road diet” and “Protected Bike Lanes” just like Fountain Ave. A road diet is a proven to slows traffic by reducing the number of vehicle lanes, often converting a 4-lane road to a 2-lane. Re-striping allows for more traffic calming measures like Protected Bike Lanes & wider sidewalks, creating a safer & more efficient street for all users, NOT just drivers. The reduction in lanes minimizes conflict points, decreases overall speeds, and lowers the number of crashes, especially rear-end and turning collisions ❗
Okay, let’s extend the logic on narrowing Fountain to doing the same thing on Santa Monica; one lane each way so we can protect bicyclists.
WOW, this is the first time we are in complete agreement ❗
This is literally why we need safer biking infrastructure.
Either you keep letting bicyclists get hit or WeHo passes a law banning all bicycles and pedestrians and only approved travel can be done by a personal vehicle. (Already sounds like Trump’s USDOT)
Can you explain how intersections will or can be improved? Last I checked there is no such thing as a continuous protection.
Protected Bike Lanes significantly improve traffic safety for all road users, including cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers. The Protected Bike Lanes function as a “traffic calming” measure that encourages drivers to slow down. When speeds are lowered, collisions are less likely to be fatal, which protects everyone. Multiple studies from different U.S. cities confirm that separating bicycles from motorized traffic creates a more predictable and orderly road environment ❗😁
I agree with all that but I still ask how intersections are safer? Bike lanes cannot be protected through these. Cyclists need to pay attention to traffic signals and cautiously ride as we all do
Eliminating left turns improves traffic safety & efficiency by removing the most dangerous maneuver at intersections. If drivers are forced to make a series of right turns or use alternative routes, crashes are significantly reduced because crossing oncoming traffic is no longer necessary. Some progressive cities have successfully reduced accidents by banning left turns, West Hollywood can do the same.
Did you know that you can go to nearby Beverly Hills and see a surgeon to remove your TDS? You might have to temporarily remove your nose ring, but they can definitely get rid of that TDS for you before it eats you alive. Just something to think about during commercial breaks while watching CNN and Netflix.
No protected bike lane could prevent an accident through an intersection. Until all the facts are presented would ask the public to know or read the full report that will come out. I am sorry to see any accident occur but that is why they are called what they are
It’s a bad intersection and drivers are impatient that time of the day. For starters, that car should be cited for not having front licence plates – it irritates the hell out of me that LEOs don’t aggressively go after minor traffic infringements by drivers – would go a long way to reducing road traffic injuries and deaths. But you know, equity rules
It’s crazy to ride a bike in LA.
So is sitting in traffic for 5 hours day. I’d go crazy.
