The latest count of confirmed coronavirus infections in Los Angeles County includes 73 in West Hollywood, which means one of every 505 residents is confirmed to have the virus. Today’s total is a 7% increase from the 68 infections confirmed as of noon on Thursday.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reports that 4,566 infections have been confirmed countywide, an increase of 13% from the 4,045 on Thursday. To date there have been 89 deaths.
The Health Department has identified 3,518 cases across all of Los Angeles County, up 17% from the 3,011 on Tuesday. It reported 13 new deaths, bringing the total to 78.
The Melrose neighborhood to the south of West Hollywood had 121 confirmed infections as of noon today, up from 113 confirmed on Thursday. The Hollywood neighborhood to the east of West Hollywood had 73 confirmed infections as of noon today, up from 71 on Thursday. There were 53 infections confirmed to date in Beverly Hills, an increase from 45 reported on Thursday. Culver City had 20 confirmed infections, up from 19 reported on Thursday. T
Health officials have emphasized that there are likely to be many more COVID-19 infections than those that have been confirmed. Only recently has the county opened up COVID-19 testing options. People who have symptoms and are 65 or have underlying health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes can apply for testing online. https://lacovidprod.service-now.com/rrs
Government leaders and health officials have shifted their opinions on the usefulness of face masks. Earlier in the pandemic, they recommended against using the N95 and other medical masks, citing a shortage of them among healthcare workers, whose intimate contact with the infected puts them more at risk. Now officials such as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti are recommending that people shield their mouths and noses while out in public.
That shielding can include something as simple as wearing a handkerchief over one’s face. Wearing a mask isn’t likely to reduce the possibility that one will become infected with the COVID-19 virus. But it does mean that those who are infected and unaware of it will, if wearing a mask, be less likely to project the virus by coughing or sneezing onto another person.
The Public Health Department continues to remind people: If you are mildly sick, stay home for at least seven days and until 72 hours after being fever and symptom free. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or pregnant should consider contacting their providers earlier when they are sick.
