Education Day Honors WeHo’s Learning Leaders

On Monday, the West Hollywood City Council issued a proclamation recognizing Education and Sharing Day, honoring the transformative role of education in fostering intellectual growth and civic values. Vice Mayor John Heilman led the presentation, joined by Rabbi Yossi Dalfin of Chabad of WeHo West and Dr. Elizabeth Lehmann, principal of West Hollywood Elementary School, who accepted proclamations on behalf of their organizations. The event highlighted the city’s commitment to educational excellence and inclusive community values.

Established in 1978 through a joint congressional resolution, Education and Sharing Day is observed annually in April, emphasizing the foundation of meaningful education. Heilman noted its alignment with Rabbi Menachem Schneerson’s legacy of promoting education and social services for all, regardless of background. Chabad of West Hollywood West, a key partner, was praised for its dedication to providing educational, cultural, and social programs to the Jewish community, reflecting Schneerson’s vision of openness and inclusion.

West Hollywood Elementary School was also celebrated for its commitment to academic achievement and the holistic development of its students. Heilman highlighted the school’s focus on inclusivity, preparing students to become thoughtful, engaged, and compassionate members of society. The council joined Heilman in officially proclaiming the day, followed by applause as the proclamations were presented to Dalfin and Lehmann.

Dr. Lehmann expressed gratitude for the city’s support, emphasizing the unique role of public education in West Hollywood. She noted that many families choose West Hollywood Elementary over other options because of its quality education and safe, accepting environment. “Families choose our school not just for the education but because it’s a place where their children, families, and lifestyles are supported,” Lehmann said. She thanked the council for their financial support and engagement, such as judging school events, and expressed pride in being part of the community.

Rabbi Dalfin echoed Lehmann’s sentiments, thanking the mayor, vice mayor, and council members for their leadership. He described West Hollywood as a small city with a significant impact, serving as a trailblazer in inclusion and respect for all. “The love and respect for every human being here is heartwarming, and many cities look to us as leaders,” Dalfin said. He connected the city’s values to Schneerson’s focus on love and inclusion, calling the proclamation a special opportunity to celebrate shared goals.

The proclamation underscores West Hollywood’s dedication to education as a cornerstone of community growth, bridging diverse organizations like Chabad and West Hollywood Elementary in a shared mission. As Education and Sharing Day encourages reflection on learning and civic responsibility, the council’s recognition affirms the city’s role in nurturing future generations through education and mutual respect.
