Los Angeles LGBT Center and Come What May Productions present a  free screening of the powerful and heartrending short film “Aban + Khorshid” at the Center’s Renberg Theatre on Aug. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Praised as “a beautifully filmed and tragic story, based on real life events, about freedoms here that carry the death penalty elsewhere” in a jury statement by the Seattle International Film Festival, “Aban + Khorshid” recounts the tragic true story of two Iranian teenagers who were hanged in 2005 for the crime of being gay. There is no charge for the event, but reservations are recommended at abankhorshid.eventbrite.com.

Immediately after the screening, Center CEO Lorri L. Jean will moderate a discussion with the film’s producer, Tommee May, and the director, Darwin Serink, followed by a reception in the adjacent courtyard at The Village at Ed Gould Plaza.

Producer Tommee May is the founder of Come What May Productions. Her film credits include the comedy “Goats,” starring David Duchovny and Vera Farmiga, which she co-produced and also starred in and “The Romantics”,  starring Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, and Anna Paquin, which she served as associate producer. Most recently, she can be seen as Mia in Nick Cassavetes’ “Yellow.” She also co-created and starred in “The One ‘N Done” series, which can be seen on Funny or Die. May studied under Mike Nichols and George Morrison while in New York and performed in several Off-Broadway plays. In addition to Aban + Khorshid, her upcoming short films include “Illusion” and “Delicious Ambiguity”, which May both stars in and produced.

Darwin Serink is an award-winning writer and director in Los Angeles. A native of Canada, Serink received his BFA in Film and Photography from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He is an alumni of the 2011 Outfest Screenwriters Lab, where he workshopped the script “Paper Cranes,” which placed in the quarterfinals at the Nicholl Fellowship for Screenwriting competition.

Aban is played by Mojean Aria and Korshid is played by Bobby Naderi. The producers are Tommee May, Candace Silvers, Christopher Leggett and Darwin Serink, and the executive producers are Brendan Filuk and Anna Brunoro.
