Opening of MUSE, De Re Gallery’s First Exhibition

De Re Gallery’s first exhibition, MUSE, presents a new body of work by British photographer Cyrus Mahboubian. The exhibit opens on Thursday and runs through October 23. Press materials call MUSE “the culmination of [Mahboubian’s] exploration of the notion of an artist’s muse in his trademark elegant style, utilizing analogue materials and traditional photographic techniques. Mahboubian, one of the most promising young photographers in London, has already taught photographic workshops at Tate and The Photographers’ Gallery and earlier this year was the Artist-in-Residence at the Gate Theatre in London’s Notting Hill. In this new work, Mahboubian sees his muse as England itself. Reviving the spirit of nineteenth-century poets, such as John Keats, he depicts an eternal land that is full of mystery, and his photographs of British actress Kasia Briars set amid this landscape explore themes of femininity, beauty, loneliness and isolation. Through Mahboubian’s lens she appears to embody the ancient spirit of the land.”
