Free Pollinator Habitat Kits Offered to West Hollywood Residents by Xerces Society

The City of West Hollywood is promoting a free Southern California Pollinator Habitat Kit program offered by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, encouraging residents to create vital habitats for monarch butterflies and other pollinators. The nonprofit, dedicated to protecting invertebrates and their ecosystems, notes that California’s pollinator populations, including bees and butterflies, are in decline, with western monarch butterflies down 95% since the 1980s and eight of 25 bumble bee species at risk due to habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change.

The Pollinator Habitat Kit provides native, pollinator-friendly plants to establish flowering gardens that support monarchs, bumble bees, and other native pollinators. West Hollywood residents, schools, and community gardens in Los Angeles County are eligible to apply, but supplies are limited. Proposals must be submitted by August 6, 2025, via the Xerces Society’s website: www.xerces.org/pollinator-conservation/habitat-kits/southern-california. Selected participants will pick up kits during the week of December 8, 2025, at designated locations, such as GrowGood Urban Farm in Bell, CA, or Native West Nursery in San Diego.

The initiative aligns with West Hollywood’s commitment to environmental stewardship, reflected in its participation in the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and efforts to enhance green spaces in its urban landscape. I applied for two! I’m grateful that this was published and I’m grateful to WeHo Public Facilities for promoting the Xerces program AND setting the fine example of taking a few strips of park lawn on Romaine in West Hollywood and turning them into something entirely useful to the pollinator and beautiful to look at. Please keep up this great work. If pollinators don’t eat, neither do we.
