‘We Need to Prepare for the Future of Our City, Which Is Not Cars’

Hello. I am Connor Maduzia. I live at 1019 N. Hayworth Ave., just up the street. I’ve lived there for three years and have never had a parking spot. It’s very easy to park in this area. I think the concerns about parking are pretty overblown.

I currently live in a $4,000-a-month three-bedroom that was built 100 years ago, and a big reason why my landlord can get away with that is because we don’t build enough new things. We don’t build enough new luxury apartments for the people who can afford them, who move in and, you know, suck up that money. I think it’s for the best if we move forward with this project, get things done, and build more housing in this city.

Those are 100-year-old buildings. I don’t think anyone particularly wants to live in a 100-year-old building. My window was fully leaking yesterday because of the rain. These buildings are falling apart. It’s time for us to update our housing stock, and it’s a little overdue.

I also want to point out that it’s a pretty easy place to live without a car. We have really good public transit access right there. We have the 4, which comes every five minutes during rush hour, the 218 and the 217, and the D Line extension will be opening before this project completes — a 10-to-15-minute ride via bus. From Wilshire and Fairfax, it’s 30 minutes downtown, and once the extension is fully complete, it’ll be about 15 minutes to Beverly Hills. Those are two major job centers.

I think this is one of those few spots where you can actually get away without a car. I admittedly have a car and drive maybe once a week. I don’t really need it — it mostly racks up street cleaning tickets. I’ve thought about getting rid of it, but it’s a little scary because it’s LA. But there’s very much a world where you can want one of these luxury apartments without a parking spot. There are people like me who like taking the bus, like taking the train, and do it when they can.

We need to prepare for the future of our city, which is not cars. There’s no climate-friendly future with cars — even electric cars — and I think we all need to come to a reckoning with that. Let projects like these happen. Thank you.

Editor’s Note: The public comment delivered by Connor Meduzia on Thursday, February 19, at the West Hollywood Planning Commission in support of the proposed six-story, 12-unit development at 946-948 N. Hayworth Ave. is a follow up to yesterday’s Dear WeHo letter in opposition.

I lived in WeHo for almost 20 years. I bought a BMW because I like driving. I was smart.(lucky enough.) to buy a condo with underground parking. parking problem solved. See how easy that was. don’t try to get rid of cars, try to get rid of a shortage of parking. LA, all of California really was built around the automobile. There is no better state in this country of ours to drive your automobile. Let’s not add cars to the list of things that used to be.

Well, I’m glad somebody agrees with me, I hate always being the lone wolf. I guess that comes with age. Anyway I should’ve added in my comment that I am also an avid walker.

You say it will take 30 minutes to get downtown from Wilshire and Fairfax but how long will it take you to get to there from your home, and how long will it take you to get to your downtown destination after your 30 minute ride?

The irony: Imagine nimby’s riding public transit with the stinky crazy homeless people that they created,by blocking housing, rehabs, mental health facilities, from being built..!

Dear fake resident Connor.I have never read a more preposterous statement from anyone. Did you ask chat gpt to “Describe a developer’s wet dream?” Your comments sound false and AI-generated: I’m thrilled to pay$4000 a month! It’s easy finding parking! I have a car but I don’t use it and all I get is tickets! I love taking the train and the bus! They should build more luxury apartments without parking! Tell the developer who paid you to deliver that ludicrous speech that they should have hired a real resident. You should be ashamed of yourself.

People should just build lots of new things with zero cars then! See how long that takes, how much the rent will be with those constraints
