Public Safety Commissioner George Nickle took to social media to call Planning Commissioner Andrew Solomon a ‘straight Texas homeowner’. Nickle is the direct appointee of Council member Lauren Meister and Solomon is the direct appointee of Mayor Chelsea Byers.
Meister immediately took to social media to go on the offense against Solomon. “Chelsea Byers ‘this is your appointee to a very important commission in our city’ – one that has to listen to the public. Meister continued [Solomon] ‘instigating once again’. Everyone else is on the defense and expected to behave while he attacks, Meister says. “It needs to stop. The public should not be afraid to have opinions.”
What did Andrew Solomon do? He commented on a George Nickle photo from Barcelona Spain that showed a beautiful street that did not have any parking. Solomon’s post: “Looks amazing! How do these people access these buildings though if they can’t park in the street right in front of them.
George Nickle’s replied. “Andrew Solomon, the straight homeowner from Texas who is against Rent Stabilization for West Hollywood residents thinks he is being clever again. They walk from where they park the car.” Solomon took it in stride replying to Nickle, “I was just curious George! P.S. I don’t think straight hate is allowed under our code of conduct.
And that’s when Council member Meister entered the fray calling on Mayor Byers, “It needs to stop, the public should not be afraid to have opinions. – (which obviously does not include Andrew Solomon’s right to an opinion)
Meister did not address Nickle’s ‘straight Texas homeowner’ comment but would surely have commented if Solomon had called Nickle a ‘faggot renter ‘. Nickle married his university professor and the two live in a rent-controlled unit on Gardner.
Solomon and his wife Kali Rogers own a condo on Kings Road. Rodgers is the direct appointee to the Public Facilities Commission of Council member Erickson. The couple have a daughter, two year old Silver Solomon who was born on West Hollywood Day, November 21st. The West Hollywood family has been under attack from the Nickle flank for their views on bike lanes and development.
After Silver’s recent 2-year old birthday, Daddy Andrew posted photos of his daughter on Instagram. He was instantly attacked by Aidan Dalton, “developer sellout”, to which Andrew replied, “did you honestly just do this on a post about my daughter’s birthday?” Dalton is the partner of Alan Strassburg who was George Nickle’s campaign treasurer during the last election.
Mayor Chelsea Byers did not publicly reply to Council member Meister’s social media post.
I don’t understand how Nickle is a safety commisioner when he’s against safer streets, bike lanes, and against anything that makes streets safer for pedestrians.
George IS for safer streets.Bike lanes where they makes sense. Narrowing Fountain to one lane in each direction does not make sense.
I think unelected commissioners are exhibiting too much power and influence in appointed roles. This reminds me of the tactics of Nika Shoon Shiong, who by her own will, tried and wanted to upend and override council votes and ignore public dissent and grievances by commission simple majority vote. Luckily West Hollywood councilmembers felt compelled by mention and have the city attorney and city manager advised on the illegal influence, maneuvers to override council resolutions or city ordinances and the usurpations to their roles and jobs and votes on the dais and the dissent of West Hollywood residents and voters.… Read more »

I think we need more straight homeowners from Texas.
A little balance and different perspectives/ideas/thoughts is a good thing. We need more of that in this city…a city that whose “leaders” all belong to one big group think and outside thought is not welcomed.

Lauren Meister shows us all the difference between ethics and integrity. She may have ethics (knowing the difference between right and wrong) but no council member with integrity wood chastise a sitting planning commissioner and call out her co-council member on social media. It is her commissioner George Nickle that attacked Andrew Soloman as a straight white homeowner and no council member with integrity would defend that statement.

It is embarrassing to have such a public feud in West Hollywood or any city. The city council members who appointed these two individuals need to have a private talk with them and remind them they are public figures serving the community. A public apology from both of them is in order.
