Guac Daddy got its official City ribbon cutting Tuesday afternoon, nine months after the hot spot taqueria first opened on West Hollywood’s eastside. Guac Daddy is a weekly go to for this guy and his daddy. My personal fave — the breakfast burrito — for dinner!
Mayor John Heilman held the ceremonial gold scissors. Owner Josh Pourgol stood next to him with a City Certificate of Proclamation. Councilmember John Erickson, Vice Mayor Danny Hang, and West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Len Lanzi were there for the ceremony just outside Plummer Park. Erickson wore a Guac Daddy apron.
It’s Pourgol’s second WeHo business. His Tu Madre is at 1111 N. Hayworth Ave. The Santa Monica Blvd. location is also his second Guac Daddy, following the original at 1824 N. Vermont Ave. in Los Feliz.
Pourgol told WEHOonline when the restaurant opened last August that the space caught him before he’d signed anything. “When I drove by this space and saw what it was before it had so much potential to become iconic and really stand out and that’s the kind of space I look for,” he said.
He said the block itself was part of the pitch. “Being on the same block as Astro Burger, Fatburger, and their signage and presence on the street I thought we can bring more traffic to the block for everybody,” he said.
Getting there wasn’t easy. “It took 3 years to open, it was really rough,” Pourgol said. “We’re here. We had a planner we were working with at the city who spent more time making it difficult for us than actually help move things forward.”
The menu runs tacos, burritos, vampiros, and quesadillas built around mesquite-grilled meats, with aguas frescas, house-made guacamoles, and breakfast burritos also on offer.
Rarely a day or night goes by we don’t pass by GD and see it jumping. It’s a great sight to see on the eastside. Here’s to years of success – thanks, Josh!
Let me guess? The planner was Laurie Yelton? The worst
This smells like Jennifer Alkire’s work…
Guac Daddy has been a great addition to the neighborhood and I love the unique approaches to old standards. The fact that the City turned the process to open a three year nightmare speaks volumes about the lack of meaningful leadership at City Hall. The Planning Commission should have a public hearing with the Community Development Director and the planner assigned to the case so the City can learn from Josh Pourgol’s ordeal. Pourgol obviously has a lot of faith in West Hollywood to endure this process. Thanks for hanging in there Josh!!!
It is amazing how much the city made this business fight to open. Even after opening the city wanted them to tone down their signage and messaging. What is wrong with West Hollywood and shame on council and staff for making West Hollywood unfriendly to new businesses.
Congratulations on the success of Quac Daddy and wonder if they are opening another location on Fairfax. This was the old Okie Dog location
