Suspected Shooter Flees on Bicycle, Caught at Plummer Park

An attempted homicide suspect led LAPD on a foot and bicycle chase through West Hollywood on Saturday, ending with his arrest on the grounds of Plummer Park.

The alerts started buzzing around 2 p.m. near Fountain Avenue and Formosa Avenue, where a 911 caller reported an incident just east of the West Hollywood border. Officers chased the suspect westbound on Fountain Avenue as he fled into the City. A police helicopter was already in the air to assist.

He got onto a bicycle at some point along the route and turned south on Fuller Avenue, with officers continuing the pursuit on foot. A scanner alert put out through Citizen identified him as a homicide suspect as the chase moved toward the park.

LAPD caught up to him between Fuller Avenue and Vista Street, along the eastern edge of Plummer Park, and took him into custody. Based on timestamps in the Citizen app, the full sequence from the initial call to apprehension took roughly ten minutes.

The shooting didn’t happen in West Hollywood, an LAPD officer told WEHOonline at the scene.

“He shot at someone,” the officer said. “Not here. Far away.”

At least six officers had the suspect surrounded on a pathway near one of Plummer Park’s historic buildings when WEHOonline arrived. The man was on the ground. Conscious, but down. EMS was also on the scene. WEHOonline has reached out to LAPD for formal confirmation of the charge.

Saturday’s arrest came roughly a block from West Hollywood’s most recent unsolved shooting. A woman was shot on the balcony while hanging out in the 1000 block of North Vista Street on the evening of April 9. She was struck in the abdomen and transported to a hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. To date, no suspect has been identified in that case, and the investigation remains open.

Saturday’s pursuit was an LAPD operation. The shooting that triggered the chase occurred outside West Hollywood’s borders, in LAPD jurisdiction.

Good thing there aren’t bike lanes on Fountain Ave. or the perp might have gotten away!
