Hot Dog “Gangs” Continue To Swarm And Disrupt Rainbow District Businesses

Hot Dog “gangs” swarmed the Rainbow District again this weekend.

Rows of hot dog carts can be seen lining Santa Monica Blvd and disrupting the businesses along Santa Monica Blvd.   According to West Hollywood business owners the carts are disrupting storefronts and creating public safety problems.   One business owner reported, “A girl’s hair caught fire,” after flames rose high from their hot dog cart.

On Friday night, one major club owner’s staff, who had tried to move the hot dog vendors from in front of their business, was threatened: “We have enforcers, leave us alone.”

Another business owner alleges the hot dog vendors are members of the MS-13 street gang. There is one boss who manages the gang of workers. “Miguel is the street manager who is in charge of WeHo,” said the business owner.

Many of the workers appear to be underage. The City of West Hollywood ordinance protecting workers does not apply here. There is no legal business license, or sales tax being collected.

Possible underage workers

Workers use the street to pour grease all over the sidewalk and onto the trees, leaving another public safety hazard for slipping, a public health issue by attracting rats and insects, and even an environmental issue by destroying landscaping and polluting oceans.

The whole situation is a nightmare, where these gangs have taken over the streets. Just a few weeks ago, a video surfaced of a hot dog cart exploding into flames. There were at least three reports of splatter and blisters on patrons.

Councilmember Danny Hang brought forward an item asking City Staff to look into options for what can be done to stop this assault. In his opening remarks, Hang stated: “Colleagues, this item is about something pretty simple, but deeply important, keeping our community safe, protecting public health, and ensuring fairness for everyone who does business in West Hollywood.”

Councilmember Erickson shot down Hang’s argument with this salvo: “However, working for a Latino immigration organization, I cannot in good conscience vote for this in its current form.” Hang buckled and yanked his bill

In this photo you can see a row of hot dog carts obstructing the crosswalks this past weekend.

The weekend prior, this photo of a flipped-over hot dog cart, grease, buns and all, lay on the ground, in one of WeHo’s busiest intersections at the peak of a busy Saturday night.

These gangs come into WeHo on the weekends and disrupt the streets, and the businesses. They traffic illegal workers and force them to work with no safeguards. There are no safeguards.

And then there is the pop-up selling alcohol to anybody on the street. They were back this past weekend too right on Santa Monica Blvd., harming legit businesses, violating labor laws, and creating chaos on the streets of the Rainbow District.

Pop up selling booze

Who is in charge? If the hot dog gangs have their own security force, I’d say they are in charge.

Perhaps Miguel, the street manager who oversees these workers, is going to run to be on the City Council. He appears to already have the support of both Councilmember Erickson and Mayor Byers who voted to ‘do nothing’ rather than address this ongoing degradation to the Rainbow District nightlife community.

Typical Leftist stupidity. Cries for “fairness” by letting these rogue carts/stands continue but what about fairness to the permanent businesses affected? How is it “fair” that a business has to pay RENT, WORKERS COMP, LIABILITY INSURANCE, CITY TAXES, STATE TAXES, HEALTH DEPARTMENT COMPLIANCE AND OTHER EXPENSES while these other people pay NONE OF THAT?! Let’s not fail to mention the public nuisance of blocking the sidewalks and pouring grease into the gutters.

What are you not getting about this? If people weren’t buying from them, they wouldn’t keep coming back! Plenty of people obviously like them, what are you going to do about it? Maybe you’re the public nuisance. You want to try to stop me on the street from buying a hot dog? Go ahead and try, sunshine. All those businesses you’re referring to have to do is offer a better deal than their competition, and their competition will disappear. If they don’t want to, everything must be fine then for them.

This is classic corporate boot licking. This is why the US has no culture. As soon as there is a cool scene, some uncool kid says “what about rent, insurance and workers comp” definitely a party pooper. I will not be extending any any invitations to this sort for my next soiree.

There’s nothing more American than a hot dog. And there’s nothing more American than hard working people trying to get ahead by pulling up their bootstraps. I was taught this by Republicans, so it’s got to be true.

Agreed. Pull up your bootstraps, work hard for MS-13, and call the enforcers over if anyone gives you trouble. It’s the American way.

That’s ridiculous. I hand dye silk and vend at music festivals, sidewalks in NorCal and at food events? Has fox news accused me of a crime yet? I can assure you I’m not a member of MS 13, 14, 27 or any other silly nonsense. Please notify me if silk vendors become the target of slander or liable.

You mean Europe has arrived. Sidewalk vendors is what makes Paris, Barcelona and Madrid interesting. It also makes travel more affordable. I guess there is a class of people who have never seen the world, and don’t recognize culture, I’m sad for you 😔.

Too bad the one shop owner’s bogus claim of MS-13 gang-members running hot dog stands didn’t warrant a serious mention here, let alone ICE raids.

Nice try.
Not really.

Unintended Consequences.

City Council not wanting to do anything may have unintended consequences. If city council had the vendors removed through practical enforcement, there is indeed some enforcement allowed, they would not be the sitting ducks for ICE that they are.

A raid will happen eventually in WeHo I am sure.

Instead of having these vendors move on, City Council who claim to be so progressive, would rather see these people in CECOT it seems.

WeHo is showing its hidden racism in trying to prevent these vendors from operating. ICE is only necessary when we ‘want’ it? Spreading lies about these vendors having gang ties? We are supposed to be a sanctuary city. Sorry but these hot dogs are better than most of the food served on the strip.

Unlike the raid a few months back on Santa Palm Car Wash, where’s ICE when it is TRULY needed? (JK. But kinda not.) Assuming it’s currently operating in the numbers & fashion stated in the article, CITY COUNCIL MUST investigate & address ASAP! Let’s pretend it’s bad as the article states: 1st: Any City Council Member with a TRUE conflict of interest is prevented from voting upon anything related to this matter. 2nd: Aren’t there “laws on the books” related to formal businesses operating on sidewalks? 3rd: Citizens of WeHo MUST inform/make formal complaints directly to the Sheriff’s Dept &… Read more »

And they even venture up into the residential neighborhoods, going onto people’s property to plug in their carts and use homeowners’ spickets for water in the late evening hours. Totally ridiculous and totally unacceptable.

This sounds like trespassing or breaking and entering. This is not a vending issue. This is a why can’t you use 911 issue? It’s like saying we should outlaw banks because many bankers commit crimes. Ridiculous. Every industry has a few bad apples. It’s not a systemic problem.

Erickson grifts for a Latino organization so the whole city of West Hollywood should suffer? At least Horvath grew up. I wonder what is wrong with this person.

If gangs are involved, why isn’t our Sheriff’s office investigating this on its own? If crimes are really being committed within spitting distance of the station, the deputies should be on the boulevard investigating what’s going on, asking for permits, clearing blocked sidewalks, issuing citations, and, if necessary, making arrests. An order from the Council is not required for deputies to fight crime. Fighting crime is literally their primary charge.
