Update: The man reportedly detained by ICE in West Hollywood last week has been identified as Alberto Cabral, a 73-year-old man who has lived in the United States since he was 15 years old. Cabral was reportedly taken from a small pickup truck on the 1200 block of N. Gardner Street last Wednesday.

A gofundme page set up in support of the 73 year old says Alberto suffers from “serious medical conditions, including heart disease and diabetes, and requires multiple daily medications, including a blood thinner to prevent stroke.” The account set up by Ruby Llamas went on to say, that “in recent weeks, despite sustaining significant injuries at work—including fractures to his lower leg and tailbone—Alberto continued to show up every week. He currently has an open wound on his lower leg, which places him at high risk for infection and poor healing if his blood sugars go uncontrolled.” To date, $4,400 of a $22,000 goal has been raised in support of Cabral.

What Residents Reported
Earlier on Wednesday, WeHoTimes, a local news blog, reported a homeowner in the area described seeing a man taken into custody near Gardner Avenue and Hampton Avenue, and that the man’s work truck and phone were left behind.

What The City And Sheriff’s Department Are Saying
The City released a statement at the time saying it “unequivocally condemns” the reported detention and described it as disruptive and hostile, adding that it targets immigrant families and undermines trust.

The City also reiterated that the Sheriff’s Department does not enforce civil immigration laws, and that deputies do not ask about immigration status when responding to calls for service.

National Tensions

Tensions over immigration enforcement have spiked nationally following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis on Jan. 7.

According to Reuters, Good, a U.S. citizen and a mother of three, was shot by an ICE agent during a federal operation, and state and federal officials have offered sharply different accounts of what happened. Reuters also reported that Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said it withdrew after the FBI took sole control of the investigation, and that protests were underway or planned in multiple cities, including Los Angeles.

There’s a protest planned for Sunday, January 11th in West Hollywood Park in response to the latest ICE activities.

This is no different than a homeless person sleeping on the streets in West Hollywood, and taken to jail for Trespassing, then told not to come back to the city of west hollywood, but city hall doesn’t care about that.

ICE is focusing on criminal illegal immigrants with about 75% of arrestees having records that include everything from murder, sexual assault, DUI, child porn, and identity theft (of which I was a victim that cost me a lot of money and headaches to correct). So maybe, just maybe this guy is one of those criminals! Why is the benefit of the doubt given to him and not to ICE officials who may be removing someone who could hurt you? The chances are pretty high that this gardener is paid in cash so he can qualify for a multitude of social… Read more »

You’re citing a very narrow statistic, for which you had to dig harder to find.
The count of violent criminal offenses is actually around 10%.
Nothing like badly skewing the numbers to fit your ideological view.

There are a handful of really skewed news sources that can be counted on to give blatant partisan misinformation and CNN is one of them.

Unequivocally? Without knowing any facts? That’s our city council for you. But if you have ever been to a council meeting it will all make perfect sense to you.

60 years and he could not apply for citizenship during that time? BS.
