Op-Ed: Is West Hollywood John Erickson’s Dirty Little Secret?

John Heilman, Valerie Terrigno, Steve Schulte, Alan Viterbi, Helen Albert, and thousands of LGBTQ residents and allies built this city in 1984 on the radical idea that no one should have to hide who they are. Not its residents nor the people elected to represent them. Three of the five council members were openly and proudly gay or lesbian at a time when that came with real personal and political risk. They didn’t build a political infrastructure to protect themselves. They built it so no one who followed would ever have to hide.

Apparently that memo didn’t reach West Hollywood Councilmember John Erickson.

I was pointed recently to his campaign website. I’ll be honest — I didn’t believe it at first. Not again. Not from him. Not from proud, queer, WeHo-bred John Erickson. But there it was, or should I say — there it wasn’t. Not a single reference anywhere to him being gay, queer, or part of the LGBTQ+ community. Not in the bio, not in the issues, not even in passing. You also won’t find West Hollywood presented as his political home either. The City appears exactly twice. Once buried in a boilerplate list of communities in the 24th Senate District, alongside places like Agoura Hills and Rolling Hills Estates, and the other in the name of the homelessness program, WeHo Cares. That’s it. Even the digital ads I’ve seen only say “as a mayor and councilmember” — as if our world-class city is something to be survived, or worse, hidden from. Mayor and councilmember where, John?

This isn’t about emphasis. It’s about erasure.

This is the same man who identified as gender nonbinary on an official California Democratic Party delegate list when it was fashionable and politically convenient — even though he had publicly identified as a gay man as recently as his inauguration. The same man who spent West Hollywood taxpayer money flying to Washington D.C. for World Pride, telling the press that “West Hollywood stands proud on the world stage.” When this community was useful, when this identity was an asset, it was front and center. Now the audience is broader and it’s gone. That doesn’t read as an oversight. It reads as a decision. Now the map is bigger and it has vanished. Not misplaced. Not forgotten. Deleted.

He used West Hollywood. He used us. He built a record here, on our streets, on our dime, inside a community that handed him a platform shaped by forty years of out and proud political power. His campaign website claims he amassed a $31 million budget surplus “under his leadership as mayor.” Problem is that math ain’t mathing. Mr. Erickson wasn’t mayor when that surplus was recorded. Sepi Shyne was. The surplus during his actual mayoral term?  $13.5 million — and even then he shared some of that fiscal year with Shyne. California State Treasurer Fiona Ma repeated the same misleading claim in her endorsement, crediting the surplus to his mayoralty. When the state treasurer can’t be counted on to do the math, who exactly is checking his work?

He’s happy to take the credit. He just doesn’t want the city. He doesn’t want us.

This isn’t how it’s always been done. Paul Koretz served on this City Council for twelve years before running for State Assembly, then the Los Angeles City Council, and finally City Controller — multiple races across four decades. He led with West Hollywood every time. Jeffrey Prang announced his 2014 run for Los Angeles County Assessor as “West Hollywood City Councilmember and four-time Mayor.” His official biography still says it. Both men ran countywide and citywide. Neither felt the need to erase where they came from.

We’ve seen this playbook before. In 2022, Lindsey Horvath stripped West Hollywood and her record of LGBTQ+ advocacy from her campaign when she ran for County Supervisor. It worked. Erickson watched and he’s following the same path — only going further. Horvath downplayed a city. Erickson is erasing an identity.

The people who built this city didn’t do it so the politicians it produced could erase it on their way out the door to something bigger.

West Hollywood is not your dirty little secret. We won’t be the “roommate” you mention only when pressed. You parade your progressive credentials at every opportunity, but then pink-wash who you are and WeHo-wash where you’re from.

West Hollywood is an out and proud city that made you, handed you a record, and gave you a name.

You don’t get to keep the résumé and lose the address.

This is one fine tasty bouillabaisse of a meal that expresses it all, I just cannot fathom being that disliked by renters, owners, and neighbors of all sorts, except for possibly our unhoused population, developers, & UNITE HERE 11.

You’re a sellout and not made of the WEHO heart this city was found upon.

By the way, he’s also got revenge on his mind as he and several other of our clueless city council members refuse to engage with the state about pushing back on the new housing regulations around the proposed subway stations. These regulations will supersede our zoning and will allow for 6-story apartment towers – with no required parking on site – to be built on single and multi family lots in our neighborhoods. John actually said recently that since he can’t afford a house here this is what must happen for affordable housing growth. John, for one, not everyone can… Read more »

I personally think that with his platform being primarily pro-Democracy and anti-Trump, it’s not enough for voters to endorse him for state senate.

I also think that Ms Horvath either strongly suggested the removal or that was his takeaway.

I’ve always thought this dude was crass & self-serving, but now I’m thinking he may well be mentally unbalanced. This obscene act at a televised public political interaction, is not only highly offensive to every sane community member, but beneath the dignity of an elected official & speaks loud & clear to his crude & unprofessional mindset. We must vote to make sure he’s never allowed a seat in the California Senate. All God’s people say Amen!

The time for polite warnings is over. John Erickson has done real damage to this city, and he should not be trusted with any higher political office. For every positive gesture he points to, there is a trail of decisions that have undermined the public interest, rewarded insiders, and left residents paying the price. Crime remains a daily concern. Homelessness is unmanaged. Empty storefronts keep spreading. And yet Erickson continues to push development permits as if infrastructure, public safety, and civic capacity were irrelevant. That is not leadership. It is negligence dressed up as progress. He also has a record… Read more »

And his fully paid for trips to Rome and Paris remain unaudited. Me thinks he needs to resign. And frankly, shame on Larry Block for sponsoring his campaign.

I have lived in West Hollywood for 36 years and I have noticed in the last decade or so that West Hollywood is attracting a lot of very political ambitious people. Our city council members used to just be residents that ran for council because they wanted to change things. But now people are moving here from other states who studied political science and urban planning and they’ve moved here to use West Hollywood as a stepping Stone. I believe this is the case for Erickson as well as for Byers. And people will vote for them because they’ve got… Read more »

They think that, because they are successful in this bubble world where few people vote and the corruption is obvious that they can take it to the next level. It doesn’t work that way here come the ugly attack ads that are totally accurate.

Yup, all Union Unite Here 11 backed candidates. They have destroyed the city. Don’t vote for anybody that is supported by Union United Here 11.

John Erickson may be trying to hide his true self in this race for a state senate seat, but I bet his opponents in this race are collecting intelligence and observations about him from various sources including social media. I bet as the primary date gets closer, rumors and innuendo will come out in negative ads and mailers.

Oh this op-ed is so rich. This is the same John Erickson representing West Hollywood as a city councilperson had an audience with Pope Francis wearing his pearls and bottled blond hair.

John Erickson is in many ways Lindsay Horvath Lite. All the Horvath drive to succeed but with only 25% of her charm and 2% of her brains. He used to act on the dais like he was Paul Lynde and he was the center square. If his opponents wanted to be mean they’d do a sizzle reel of him in the Mayors seat. How well would that play in PV?

My question is: where’s the money coming from to fund his campaign? I’ve gotten flyers in the mail and even seen a TV spot. Those cost a lot of money—and I can’t imagine he’s got that much himself.
