Meister to Erickson: Not You. Endorses Brian Goldsmith for State Senate

Low key this is awkward.

West Hollywood Councilmember Lauren Meister endorsed Brian Goldsmith for California State Senate District 24 on Wednesday. Her colleague John Erickson is running for the same seat.

Meister said the district needs somebody who plays well with others. Any wonder what she means. Or rather – who?

When reached for comment, Meister told WEHOonline that Goldsmith’s background set him apart.

“Brian is politically savvy without being a career politician,” Meister said. “He’s worked with people I respect, from Hillary Clinton to Katie Couric. He has a well-rounded background — working on campaigns, going to law school, involved in the tech world, and a respected journalist.”

She said his personality matters too.

“He’s also a nice guy — someone I think will ‘play well’ with others,” Meister said. “In Sacramento, you don’t just have 4 colleagues, you have 39 — you have to be smart, open-minded, likable, and convincing. I think Brian has all of these qualities.”

The endorsement carries an edge. UNITE HERE, the powerful hotel and hospitality workers union with deep, (some say too much) influence in West Hollywood, has already endorsed Erickson. Goldsmith told WEHOonline he knew it. “They have already endorsed my opponent,” he said.

When asked how he compares to Erickson, Goldsmith didn’t bite. “I’ll leave it to the voters to compare us,” he said. “I’m running a positive campaign on my experience and ideas.”

Brian Goldsmith | WEHOonline

Goldsmith is from Beverly Hills. First-time candidate. Harvard undergrad, Stanford Law. Spent a decade-plus as a political commentator at CBS News, Yahoo News, and CNN — he’s the guy who produced the Katie Couric-Sarah Palin interview. He’s raised more than $2 million in the SD-24 race, more than any of the other 13 candidates.

Goldsmith told WEHOonline back in February that West Hollywood means something to him personally. “West Hollywood is arguably the capital of LGBTQ America, and I take that very seriously,” he said. “I take very personally the responsibility to be an ally to this community in the state legislature.”

We caught up with Goldsmith Wednesday afternoon and asked him what he’d do for West Hollywood first if elected. “West Hollywood is an incredible city, but it’s expensive to live and work here,” he said. “I’d help small businesses and restaurants — and the families and jobs they support — stay here by doing a comprehensive review of the state regulations, fees, and permitting that are driving up costs. Then I’d try to pass legislation simplifying the system so it’s easier, cheaper, and faster to get things done.“

Brian spent years advising other candidates, including Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign. Running himself, he said, is different. “Now I have a lot more sympathy for the candidate,” he said. “It’s different when your name is on the ballot, when the questions are about you.”

He called Meister’s support meaningful.

“So honored to have the support of Lauren Meister, a bold and courageous community leader and Councilmember,” he said. “No one has been stronger protecting the LGBTQ community.”

We asked Goldsmith Wednesday what made this the right moment to run. “We’re getting squeezed on both sides — Trump has weaponized Washington against us, and Sacramento has failed to deliver the results that our residents expect,” Goldsmith said. “I never planned to run for office but this moment demands that all of us step up to do something. It’s more important than ever that folks in elective office can do two things at once: defend our state from MAGA…and produce better outcomes on affordability, clean and safe streets, public education, and more.”

The SD-24 primary is June 2.

Goldsmith will bring some fresh air to Sacramento. He’s been around the game long enough to know how it’s best played. Goldsmith has few, if any, political enemies. Get rid of the baggage.

I was already planning on voting for Goldsmith but with LM’s endorsement I am more than likely to do so

Hilarious. Our aerospace industry is rebounding to the tune of billions of dollars, our economy is spectacular. Sure, housing is expensive, but by all means let’s put that blame on Gavin Newsome. C’mon.

It would be helpful to local businesses if they can renew their leases. If Erickson doesn’t work to repeal the recently passed state law SB79 then nearly half of West Hollywood will be automatically rezoned for high rise development on July 1st. A half mile radius around Santa Monica/San Vicente, Fairfax/Santa Monica, and La Brea/ Santa Monica will be slated for demolition because of subway stations that won’t even be built for 20 years. Read about SB79 and you’ll be shocked that it actually became law. It’s the end of West Hollywood as we know it unless that law is… Read more »

Erickson has no intention of doing anything to stop SB79. He showed his true “I love developers over the community” colors when he and his sycophant minions Byers and Hang voted down Heilman’s motion, seconded by Meister to further explore options to SB79. We need to vote all three of these Trumpians out.

I think the candidate lived across from me on Rugby Dr for awhile. If this is the same one who ran for weho council couple years back. He was very smart and pleasant. I’d suooort him too over Erickson, who has really let me down esp shoving the Fountain nightmare scenarios down out throats with a like it or lump it mentality

That was Robert Oliver, a very nice guy. Brian Goldsmith lives near Doheny. He is a common sense Democrat who is going to be promoting smart economic policies that help families. Erickson has been bad for West Hollywood residents but we can’tthink we can simply kick him to Sacramento without the cancer spreading….

Steve, thank you. I am in complete agreement. He is at his best when being dismissive and nasty.

Have you ever witnessed how disrespectful of her and others Erickson is? The latest City Council mtg was a prime example. No way he should be allowed anywhere near state government.

fwiw, Lauren Meister lost this race to be the SCAG representative by a vote of 10-1. The only vote she received was the one she cast for herself.

It is unfortunate that John wants council to respect him but he cannot do that for others. If that is true he could have easily cast his support for Lauren and still get his outcome. That shows what character he chose to present.

The Westside COG vote is made up of elected councilmembers from Weho, Culver City, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. The point is that not only did John not vote for her, NO ONE voted for her. Including other councilmembers in other cities— people that she had served alongside for over a decade.

Ouch. That’s gotta hurt and you know Erickson is pissed. Even his own fellow councilmember won’t endorse him. I’m not voting democrat anymore..they’ve ruined this state…they left me. But he seems like a decent candidate. Happy to hear he wants to roll back some of the regulations the democratic party created and hurts us tremendously. No more one party rule!!
