Grant Smith has passed away after a long battle with cancer. Grant had been spinning tunes in West Hollywood for over 40 years as a regular at Motherlode, the Abbey, and Revolver.
The legendary DJ was famous for his dance music and his mixes, and his DJ sets rocked the dance floors at Studio One, Arena, and the largest dance clubs in West Hollywood and the Los Angeles area.
Smith’s Facebook page showed his history: DJ at Motherlode — “I was a twink when I first went here in 1979. Now I have worked here since 2009.”
Grant was born in Wilmette, Illinois. He celebrated his birthday on December 26th, telling me that he was always working on his birthday. For my 60th birthday party at Revolver, I asked Grant to join and spin the tunes. He not only accepted the gig — he came equipped with my favorite songs from the 80s and 90s.
Jim Hall commented on Instagram: “RIP to the talented DJ Grant Smith. Always such a pleasure to be around and discuss old and new music thru the decades, and gossip about the news in WeHo. He will be missed throughout the WeHo community.”

I was so sad to find out that Grant had passed away. He was not only a great DJ, but also a great videographer! Loved his disco events at Mickey’s. Rest in peace, my friend.
What a legend. He played records at bars. Perhaps an Arlington Cemetery funeral is warranted.
It’s great Grant’s dedication extends even to his birthday! Sounds like a fantastic 60th party at Revolver. Hopefully, the atmosphere wasn’t too Fnaf-esque – no animatronics jumping out to startle anyone while they were enjoying those classic 80s and 90s tunes! Grant’s attention to detail with your favorite songs shows real talent and dedication. What a memorable gift!

Is there a memorial planned? Does anyone know if his old friend Paul Adams knows?
