Two Shootings in Five Days: Supervisor Horvath Demands Action in West Hollywood

Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath issued a statement Tuesday responding to two recent shootings in West Hollywood, saying she has personally contacted Captain Fanny Lapkin and Sheriff Robert Luna to demand action.

“Solving these crimes is a top priority, and every resource is available to the LA County Sheriff’s Department to aid in identifying those responsible, holding them accountable, and restoring safety to our neighborhoods,” Horvath said in the statement.

Horvath said her thoughts are with the victims. “I wish both a full and speedy recovery, and for justice to prevail swiftly,” she said.

The statement comes after a man was shot on Norton Avenue Tuesday afternoon while walking with his wife and infant child, and after a West Hollywood woman was shot on her balcony on Vista Street on April 9. Neither suspect has been apprehended.

The City of West Hollywood also issued a statement Tuesday, pledging additional patrols by Sheriff’s deputies and Security Ambassadors and calling the incidents “deeply unsettling.” Anyone with information is asked to contact West Hollywood Station detectives at (310) 855-8850 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (800) 222-8477.

Was the person responsible for the 2021 homicide at the Avalon ever brought to justice?

Hahaha… rolling over laughing, Lindsay… what a joke! Funny how ‘more security action’ suddenly becomes a priority after years of voting the other way and staying quiet while residents were begging for exactly that. At this point, the statement doesn’t sound courageous or even especially competent — it sounds like a recycled line from someone trying to outrun the record. Nothing says leadership quite like discovering public safety only after the political cost of ignoring it becomes too obvious to hide. The real insult is expecting people to treat this as concern rather than convenient theater.

Statements matter, but action matters more. The West Hollywood City Council should be leading with a concrete plan to address the increase in crime, including ensuring sufficient Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department presence in our neighborhoods—and that plan should be clearly communicated so there is full transparency. We also need to stop vilifying law enforcement—they should be seen as a partner in this work. We can support accountability while also fostering a climate that attracts strong candidates. The reality is that recruiting is already a challenge, and perception plays a role. If the profession is seen as undesirable, fewer qualified… Read more »

Hypocrite! She voted to defund our sheriff’s department and re-allocate funds for safety ambassadors. This was all done when she was on West Hollywood’s City Council. TBH. she wasn’t even voted by the public. When John Duran had to vacate his seat, the remaining council members appointed her to take his seat. This was the beginning of the downfall of West Hollywood’s City Council. I want her to defend herself on how her policies have made us safer. Why is she now concerned and shouldn’t she take some responsibility. Not to be trusted

Actually when Council member Sal Guarriello passed away the City Council did not want to hold an election but rather wanted to appoint someone they could rely upon. But the Council split. Abbe Land wanted to appoint her friend, Women’s Advisory Board member Lindsay Horvath, who had just moved into West Hollywood. Politically powerful lobbyist, Steve Afriat, was pushing a member of the Planning Commission. Horvath got the appointment but lost the 2011 election to John D’Amico, who ran as an outsider opposed to back room political deals.

Hey Lindsay: Too many of us remember you voting as a City Council member to “de-fund” the Sheriff in Weho as part of your efforts to suck up to LA Times heiress, Nika SoonShiong, who you appointed as your Public Safety Commissioner in order to get the LA Times endorsement for County Supervisor. We also remember your support, along with that of John Erickson, for George Gascon for DA and your opposition to Prop. 39 that restored some sanity to criminal sentencing. Before you grandstand, you should at least owe up to your past mistakes and apologize to the residents… Read more »

I don’t particularly care for her but I appreciate the statement of concern and assistance . It’s been crickets from City Hall and the Council.

Er , this is a joke right? In 2022, Lindsey Horvath voted in favor of defunding the sheriffs.

How about Horvath engage in a bit of introspection on how her anti-cop policies have put West Hollywood and the entire region in danger in the first place. It was Horvath and her direct appointee to the Public Safety Commission, Nika Soon-Shiong who started the narrative that has weakened the LASD in its ability to respond, to recruit, and to deploy. Now she demands “action”? How? Empty words from an empty-headed politician.

Unfortunately Ms. Horvath appears to have set the low standard for the community and particularly members of the City Council and others in City Hall. Now she wants to be “all hands on deck” which appears to be seeking recognition once again. The shooting yesterday alerted me from the moment I was aware of helicopters flying shortly after noon. The location is on Norton adjacent to the Fairfax Post Office that many residents of the neighborhood walk to. Personally I walk daily in the neighborhood from Norton to Sunset and Fairfax/Spaulding Square to Flores and remain quite alert not engaging… Read more »

When Lindsey was on the weho city council, it was “defund, defund, defund!”
Now all of a sudden, it’s defend, defend, defend!”
The hypocrisy is sickening!!

Too little, too late Supervisor Horvath. Unfortunately you were at the root of the dismantling of safety as a priority in West Hollywood. If we recall, you valued tge LATimes support fir your election support for Supervisor more than the safety of residents in 1.9 sq. miles. “If you see something, say something”. The residents did and continue to do so. Where were you then. Giving the impression that you are racing to the rescue appears to be another false impression.
