The West Hollywood City Council issued a proclamation recognizing April as National Arab American Heritage Month, celebrating the profound contributions of Arab Americans to American society. Vice Mayor John Heilman delivered the proclamation at the council’s Monday night meeting, highlighting their impact across fields like medicine, law, education, and culture. Nadir Fouani, representing the Arab America Foundation, accepted the proclamation, joining the council for a photo to mark the occasion. The event underscored the city’s commitment to honoring diversity and fostering inclusivity.
Heilman emphasized the century-long contributions of Arab Americans, noting their role in enriching the nation through their entrepreneurial spirit, resilient family values, and dedication to education. “Arab Americans have also enriched our society by sharing in the entrepreneurial American spirit that makes our nation free and prosperous,” he said. The proclamation aims to educate the public, counter misconceptions, and celebrate the community’s heritage, which has helped build a stronger, more diverse nation where individuals are treated equally and feel safe.
Fouani expressed gratitude on behalf of the Arab America Foundation, which has led the National Arab American Heritage Month initiative since 2017. He detailed the initiative’s growth, starting with a few states and expanding to hundreds of proclamations from local governments, counties, and school districts by 2025. “By 2022, the initiative was recognized by Congress, the U.S. Department of State, and 45 governors,” Fouani said. He noted that in 2023, former President Joe Biden officially recognized April as National Arab American Heritage Month in a letter to the foundation, marking a significant milestone.
The Arab America Foundation’s efforts, supported by 250 volunteers across 26 states, include cultural events and proclamations that highlight Arab American contributions. Fouani thanked the city council, Vice Mayor Heilman, and Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers for their support, stating, “Your support helps empower our communities and uplift us as well.” The proclamation encourages West Hollywood residents to honor the rich heritage, culture, and contributions of the Arab American community throughout April.
The recognition reflects West Hollywood’s ongoing dedication to celebrating diverse communities, fostering a society where cultural heritage is valued and shared. By proclaiming April 2025 as Arab American Heritage Month, the city joins a national movement to acknowledge the lasting impact of Arab Americans on culture, society, and democracy, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity and mutual respect.
