Larry,
John Erickson touts the numbers of businesses opening in the city. But has anyone actually looked at (a) the number of new businesses opening in the city vs the number shuttering, and (b) the average length of time businesses actually stay in business?

30 businesses opening while 10 close seems like a positive, however 10 opening to replace 30 closing is probably a crisis.

Also, if a typical business can’t make it through a 5-year lease, is West Hollywood going to be seen by someone as a good place to chance their future?

More and more chains will open here as they among the few that can afford both the rent and the cost of doing business in this city (high hourly rate for low skill workers). Mom & Pops can’t survive here. It will either go more high end …or if that fails…a city in decline.
