No Increase Reported in COVID-19 Infections in WeHo Since Saturday’s Count of 102

The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in West Hollywood may be flattening, with no increase reported today from the 102 confirmed infections reported on Saturday.

However, the number of confirmed infections across Los Angeles County continues to rise. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reports that there have been 670 new confirmed COVID-19 infections as of noon today, bringing the total to10.047, an increase of 6.7% from yesterday’s count.

The Health Department reports 40 new deaths related to a COVID-19 infection, which brings the total of 360. “Eighty-five percent of people who died had underlying health conditions,” the Health Department reports. “Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 292 people (87% of the cases):  34% of deaths occurred among Latinx residents, 32% among White residents, 17% among Asian residents, 16% among African American residents, and 2% among residents identifying with other races. Upon further investigation, 11 cases reported earlier were not L.A. County residents.

As of today, the number of confirmed infections in Beverly Hills has increased to 76 from 74. Culver City saw an increase of two confirmed infections, bringing its total to 34.  Hollywood had four new infections, bringing the total to 121.  There ten newly confirmed infection in the Melrose neighborhood, bringing its total to 210.

Confirmed infections in the Little Armenia neighborhood in Los Angeles, which has the highest proportion of infected residents in all of Los Angeles County, have increase from 41 yesterday to 44 today. That means 548.29 of every 100,000 Little Armenia residents have been confirmed to be infected. There has been no increase in the 43 confirmed  infections in the Crestview neighborhood, which has the second largest number of infections per capita with 378.25 infections per 100,000 residents. West Hollywood continues to have the third-highest rate, with 276.04 confirmed infections per 100,000 residents.

The Health Department says that 63,000 people have been tested to date for the COVID-19 infection, which 11% of them testing positive.  A testing site adjacent to West Hollywood opened Monday on Alden Drive at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Those who want to be tested must first go online to see if they qualify and to book an appointment. Testing is limited to those who have symptoms of an infection, which include coughing, a fever, tiredness and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing.  Same day or next-day testing is available only for those who are over 65 and/or have underlying healthcare conditions. 

As of midnight on Wednesday, the Health Department will require that employees of businesses that are allowed to remain open because they provide essential services (grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.) wear cloth face coverings and that customers also wear them to reduce the possibility of transmitting the virus.  The businesses most post physical distancing plans, alerting customers that they must stand at least six feet apart while waiting in checkout lines.

The Health Department’s “stay at home” order, now extended through May 15, requires the closure of all non-essential businesses.  Exempt are grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, medical marijuana dealers and a few others. The stay at home order is an effort to keep people who may be infected with the COVID-19 virus from interacting with others and infecting that. 

The Health Department continues to remind people that the important steps one can take to protect yourself from the virus are to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, avoid being around sick people, practice physical distancing, especially by staying at home and wearing a face covering when out buying groceries or medicine or providing essential services.

If you are mildly sick, the Health Department advises that you stay home for at least seven days and until 72 hours after being fever- and symptom-free. Call your doctor if you are concerned and/or your symptoms worsen. Individuals who are elderly, have underlying health conditions or pregnant should consider contacting their providers earlier when they are sick.
