The rigged elections. The pot calling the kettle black. One party accuses the other party of election rigging while being guilty of the same misconduct. The morals and ethics tossed to the side to bolster one side or the other. When you fight fire with fire you are sure to burn down the house.
What is gerrymandering? It is when district maps are drawn to grant a one party an advantage. The Supreme Court has found that gerrymandering cuts against democratic principles. Governor Newsom is not president yet, but he is acting just like Trump and stepping on your vote and your voice.
In 2010, California voters entrusted our Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission with the power to draw congressional district maps. — constitutionally banning Sacramento politicians from gerrymandering and politicizing the election process.
But that does not seem to stop Gov. Newsom from pushing the voters choice to the side in favor of politics. Newsom is the Governor of California. He is not the Governor of the United States. Is he a Trump in blue? I voted for the Gavin, but did not vote for him to use us as a power play. He should represent all the people in California and we are not fodder for what is going on in Texas. And Texas did not create a Citizens Redistricting Commission. California did.
Governor Newsom appears to be carving his way into the national news cycle as the defender of democracy. Gavin’s ex-wife Kimberly Guilfoyle, who then became Donald Trump Jr.’s girlfriend and MAGA superstar is pulling the strings to get Steve Bannon and other big name elephants to appear on Gavin’s podcast. Suddenly Gavin is moving to the right.. on crime, on homelessness, on trans rights.
Jeanne Raya who served as Chair of California’s first redistricting commission wrote in Cal Matters – the only nonprofit news organization devoted to covering statewide issues wrote:
These issue (Prop 50) was decided by the VOTERS of CA with PROP 11 (2008,) and PROP 20. (2010) It’s IN THE HANDS OF A BALANCE COMMISSION to do ANY redistricting AS PER CA CONSTITUTION. CALIFORNIA CITIZENS REDISTRICTING COMMISSION Before the 2011 redistricting cycle, the California State Legislature drew those lines. In 2008, voters PASSED Proposition 11, creating the California Citizens Redistricting Commission to draw state districts, and 2010 expanded its scope to draw congressional lines. The Commission is politically balanced – made up of 5 Democrats, 5 Republicans, 4 others .Commissioners are selected through a transparent application process where they are assessed on their impartiality, skills, and ability… Read more »
Comparing Gavin Newsom to Donald Trump is like comparing Josef Stalin to George Washington. I understand your desire to pretend to be somewhat moderate here, but Gavin Newsom is quite literally evil.
Vote NO
In 2022 the fed census bureau (I think the Commerce Dept.) acknowledged they had seriously undercounted the populations of several states including Florida, Texas, and Arizona giving them fewer representation in Congress. The other undercounted states were also red states but I don’t remember which ones they were. (I’m sure this error was unintentional). But the admission continued that they had overcounted several states including New York, Illinois, and California, giving those states greater representation in Congress. (Again, these things happen.) By law, when such a thing as this happens it can be corrected in the year that ends with… Read more »
Actually it’s whatever the people of California wants, they get. This is a vote on the ballot. Newsom isn’t just doing this with the legislature like Texas did. They are letting voters weigh in.
And none of what you said in the beginning of your comment is true.
I don’t have to prove it, because you don’t ever prove your statements either! Funny how that works 🙂
YOU’RE BACK! Where’ve you been?
There is a committee to determine district lines in CA made up equally of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. But Newsom is going to override that committee and redraw those lines another way … for now. So Gavin will get what he wants.
“Republicans.” Who picks that committee?
VOTER ID NOW! That land grabbing, redisrtricing and the FIRE AID scam in the Palisades & Altadena and the illegal re-mapping crap. Newsom is so dishonest. Hope he enjoys Italy and the French Laundry just as he is enjoying land grabbinng the Palisades & Altadena with the Chinese. How did he and his fake auntie Nancy Pelosi get so rich? California, we are so f*cked. I will never vote Demo again. West Hollywood is a dumpster fire. Not the great place when I moved here 12 years ago.
Blah blah blah. While your fing president robs the country of more billions. What a load of shit.
I couldn’t disagree more.
I fought and voted to assure civilian control, but not taking this opportunity to fight back the Republicans is dangerous and quite stupid, in my humble opinion.
so if the dems best idea is their bad idea and dems cant come up with any other new idea in an infinite universe then the red team is smarter than the blue team.
Sorry, no. We are fighting for our democracy. I will endorse anyway possible to ensure that the Trump administration is stifled. And yes, fire fighters do fight fire with fire.
they fight fire with water. so your saying we are only as good as their bad idea.. they jump off the bridge and the dems follow.. try leading. try putting your faith in the middle who can see it for what it is
Ordinarily I would agree that California shouldn’t change its redistricting system, but this is an extraordinary time. We have a Republican president who is willing to cheat Democrats out of House seats by calling on red states to redistrict mid-decade in order to hold onto their slim majority. The California proposition is limited in its effect and only will be triggered by the action of other states. It’s not permanent. It’s a reasonable response to the unreasonable and unethical behavior of red states. Democrats cannot afford to take the high road every time Republicans play dirty. Otherwise, we’ll find ourselves… Read more »
well, nobody wins. every red state can re-district and everybody across the country will point fingers at each other rather than stand up for the law as intended- and protect an opportunity for future compromise. the result of fighting fire with fire is burning down democracy. what we need is a hose to put out the fire — stand for doing the right thing and shining a light on the wrong thing.
You want to “stand for the right thing” while the other side cheats, lies, steals, breaks the law so they can be in power indefinitely. How about no.
Larry, listen to yourself.
and their bad idea is gavins best idea. listen to yourself. first you decry what they are doing and then copy it.
Of California’s 52 congressional districts, 9 of them are Republican. That means 17 percent of their delegation is Republican when Republicans regularly win 40 percent of the vote in that state.
CA is already gerrymandered.
No Larry – we need to stop them from gaining seats that unfairly put them in office forever.
Are you talking about the democrats? They’ve already gerrymandered every state they can.
Dems are slimmy bastards
Republicans then have come a long way: COMPLETE SCUM NOW.
You are so misinformed it’s pathetic. You and the rest of the Republican cronies in this country supporting a documented criminal who is stealing money from Americans as we speak. And then trying to stay in power forever. Whatever happened to the Republican Party stance of small government and stay out of my business? Now you want to control women’s bodies, control who can live in this country (tho you are an immigrant yourself) and control who can vote and for whom? Republicans have helped this lunatic get where he is and now the country is in real danger of… Read more »
Trump has never been one for subtlety. He’s not hiding behind commissions or procedural language. He’s calling for redistricting that benefits his allies, and he’s doing it on camera.
That throws a lot of people into a fit. But let’s be honest: it also shines a light on the game both parties have been quietly rigging against everyday voters.
For years, voters have been gaslit into thinking the system is fair because it looks official. It has commissions, procedures, and court filings. But Trump is showing us what the process really is: a partisan chessboard, with our votes as pawns.
