OpEd: Give the Key to the City to Chappell Roan

This year we should give the key to the city to Chappell Roan.   The 2024 Grammy Award Winner for Best New Artist has captured the world’s attention with her hit song that sings West Hollywood.

“Pink Pony Club” was written and inspired by ‘The Abbey”,   Roan gives full credit to West Hollywood’s iconic gay bar and restaurant for the song.    Pink Pony Club has become an universal LGBTQ+ anthem, and the words West Hollywood are on billions of lips every dance floor around the globe.

In a recent interview Roan reflected on her 2018 journey from Missouri and her first trip to the Abbey,  “All of a sudden I realized I could truly be any way I wanted to be, and no one would bat an eye.” “It was so different from home where I always had such a hard time being myself and felt like I’d be judged for being different or being creative. I just felt overwhelmed with complete love and acceptance, and from then on I started writing songs as the real me.”

The branding, the publicity, the longevity does more to benefit and promote the City of West Hollywood as a.beacon of hope and global gay destination than any current idea or program being promoted by the city council or the chamber.   

Chappell Roan’s contribution to West Hollywood is priceless and enduing.   

The key to the city should be gifted to Chappell Roan!
