Secret Tiki Bar Hides Above Hot Dog Stand

Tucked above the iconic Tail o’ the Pup hot dog stand in West Hollywood, The Lucky Tiki is a speakeasy-style tiki bar that once served as The Doors’ 1970 workshop and recording studio. This hidden gem at 8512 Santa Monica Boulevard delivers a vibrant atmosphere with theatrical cocktails and a cozy, 44-seat setting.

To locate The Lucky Tiki, head to Tail o’ the Pup’s patio off Santa Monica Boulevard and find the red door. Nearby, a pickle barrel hides a small speaker with a button inside its side panel. Press it to connect with a host, who will grant entry if you have a reservation or if one of the limited walk-in spots is available.

The bar’s drink menu features dramatic offerings like the Elvis in Hawaii and The Ghost of Jim Morrison, served in unique vessels and occasionally accompanied by bartenders’ songs. Food options, available until 10 p.m., include egg rolls, coconut shrimp, a Hawaiian-style hot dog, and the full Tail o’ the Pup menu.

Reservations are strongly recommended due to the bar’s small size, with 34 of its 44 seats bookable through Resy up to 30 days in advance. New slots open at midnight on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and all visits are capped at 90 minutes. The Lucky Tiki operates from 5 p.m. to midnight Wednesday through Saturday and 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
