Did you know Tashman Home Center, one of West Hollywood’s longest-running family-owned businesses, has been on Santa Monica Boulevard since 1961? Which is kinda wild when you stop and think about how many businesses have come and gone in the more than 60+ years this local, small business has been serving our community. It’s also one of those places you probably don’t think about until you need something, a ripped screen fixed, a weird little plumbing part, keys made, or a can of paint.
I know, I know, a lot of us default to Home Depot or Lowe’s out of habit, or just plain laziness. I know I did. Or maybe you didn’t know Tashman was there. Truth is, I had driven by it for years without noticing it. But just in case you didn’t know, we’ve got a gem of a neighborhood home center right here in WeHo’s mid-city, one that will very likely have what you need. Bonus: no crowds, and without the traffic fight just to run an errand.
WeHo Rewind: A Quick Tashman Backstory
Before it was “Tashman Home Center,” In 1959, Charles Tashman and his son, Mark, arrived in the U.S. and started working out of the back of their 1957 Plymouth. Two years later they opened Tashman Screens in 1961, then expanded into hardware a few years later in 1971. Over time, it grew into a hardware, screens and glass, plus windows and doors business. The store rebranded as Tashman Home Center in 2015.
Mark Tashman passed away about a year ago at age 87. His son, Kenny, now runs the business, and he still talks about learning the store from the ground up, starting with a first paycheck of 25 cents. Something that’s stuck with him, and still guides the business, is the family motto: “Don’t pay twice when you can get it done right the first time.” Personally speaking, in an era of seeing so many businesses disappearing, it sure feels good to walk or drive past Tashman and see it still standing, let alone thriving more than half a century later.
Now the old business gets a new look.
They recently completed a remodel of its window and door showroom, turning the space into a larger, walk-through setup. And boy is it nice. Step into the showroom and you see it’s a more hands-on experience. The new space is about 3,000 square feet, and it’s laid out so you can compare full-size options in person.
They also gave the main store a bit of a glow up. You’ll find wider aisles, updated shelving and department flow, and refreshed paint, lawn and garden areas. Kenny says they didn’t want it to only be a cosmetic update. He wanted to consider “the entire customer experience” for both the homeowner and contractor looking to tackle a major job. He says the investment is about continuing to serve West Hollywood for the next 65 years, adding they’re committed to remaining a local business that is accountable to its customers and earns their trust by doing things right.
Parking is part of the update too. The store says there’s added parking behind the showroom, plus new space for sit-down consultations for larger projects.

I love Tashman’s! They have everything you need, and the staff is helpful and friendly.
Kenny is the definition of “heimish.” Yiddish for: “having qualities associated with a homelike atmosphere: simple, warm, relaxed, cozy, or unpretentious.” I have shopped at their store for over 35 years. The Tashmans are kind, helpful good people. Congratulations on your continued success! MAZALTOV!
