Ventanas Huicholas by Natalie Gonzalez Unveiled at Plummer Park on July 6

The City of West Hollywood is set to host a vibrant pop-up art installation and craft-making event, Ventanas Huicholas, by San Diego artist Natalie Gonzalez, on Sunday, July 6, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. This free, all-ages event will coincide with the afternoon’s Summer Sounds concert, offering a chance to engage with a rich cultural tradition alongside live music.

Ventanas Huicholas features Tsikuris, traditional votive objects crafted by weaving yarn on two wooden sticks, known as God’s Eyes in the Wirarika indigenous language of Mexico. These artifacts, common in northwest Mexican and southwest U.S. native communities, serve as ritual tools believed to protect during prayer, acting as magical objects and ancient symbols tied to spiritual weaving motifs. Attendees are invited to create their own God’s Eyes with Gonzalez, celebrating the Huichol (Wixárika) people’s heritage from Mexico’s Sierra Madre Occidental, known for their preserved culture and intricate art. The Huichol call these Tsikuri “the power to see and understand things unknown,” a practice dating back to Spanish colonial times when they were placed at work sites or along trails.

Gonzalez, born in Los Angeles and raised partly in Mexico, holds a degree in Cultural Management from Universidad de Guadalajara. Her work spans public art, visual art, and curating, often using acrylic, mixed media, and installations with simple shapes and organic imagery. She contributed to ENVZN2023: Urban Art Takeover in San Diego and serves as Exhibitions Coordinator at the Oceanside Museum of Art West Gallery, bringing her expertise to this project.

Part of the City’s Art on the Outside Program, which rotates sculptures, murals, and digital works for six months to three years, Ventanas Huicholas reflects West Hollywood’s commitment to public art funded by the Public Beautification & Art Fund. No RSVP is needed, and the event ties into the city’s broader arts offerings, including Summer Sounds, WeHo Pride Arts Festival, and Urban Art, detailed at www.weho.org/arts.
