LOS ANGELES — VOX Femina Los Angeles, LA’s premier women’s choir, will open the doors on its rehearsal process for the upcoming concert, Weather the Storm, at Congregation Kol Ami in West Hollywood on Tuesday, May 6th, 2025 starting at 7:30 PM.
The open rehearsal, which is supported in part by a grant from the City of West Hollywood, provides an opportunity for the public to see behind the scenes of the award-winning choir which has been a part of the Los Angeles arts landscape for almost 30 years (the concert being rehearsed is the final performance of the groups 28th season!) The audience will experience the anatomy of a VOX rehearsal, as the Founding Artistic Director, Dr. Iris S. Levine, fine-tunes the singers’ performance of repertoire for the upcoming concert. Dr. Levine will also provide commentary throughout about the musical selections, and the evening will conclude with a discussion with the audience about what they have heard, inviting them to not only listen but to explore and acknowledge the ways in which they can make the world a better place.
Since its debut in 1997 with the Gay Men’s Choir of Los Angeles, VOX has performed a catalogue of music exemplifying diverse musical styles and repertoire. In keeping with its mission to ‘give women voice’, VOX has commissioned over 50 new works for women’s choirs, and collaborated with over 35 contemporary composers. The upcoming concert that the ensemble will be rehearsing for is no exception. For Weather the Storm, which will honor the five year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, Dr. Levine has commissioned a new treble version of Rollo Dillworth’s “Weather: Stand the Storm” based on a poem of the same name by award-winning poet and scholar Claudia Rakine, as well as a new arrangement of the African American spiritual, “I Know I’ve Been Changed.”
The event is free to the public but attendees must RSVP through the organizations website.
