Just another Sunday morning, says Candice Schwam, General Manager of Showtime Apparel. Schwam has lived and worked in West Hollywood for 25 years. She told me Sunday afternoon, “I’ve never seen it this bad.”
“They are shitting on the trees in front of the store so I have to go buy kitty litter down at Pavilions and put it on it. And then people walk on it and keep walking down the street.”
“Actually the police came and gave them wipes, they didn’t do anything. They actually gave them wipes. Another business owner around the corner from the barber shop, the police told them we are not going to do anything because they are exposing themselves, and they just handed them wipes and asked if they needed anything else.”
“I just got done for an hour cleaning up all the onions from the hot dogs in front of my store from last night. It brings all the smoke and the smell into the store. And it’s all over the sidewalks. The sidewalks they don’t clean it enough, it looks like garbage like the alley on the side.”
“A homeless lady just came into my store and pushed me. And another just recently that spit on me. And it’s disturbing that they can do that, like that one guy stabbed that person eleven times and then he’s out two days later. It’s really something around here, and it’s really affecting the businesses because people don’t want to come over here.”
“It’s gotten worse over the years, it’s not the same, and no one does anything. This new group of ambassadors don’t do anything. At least the last ones did something.”
And more of the same down at the BlockParty on Sunday January 18th. Hot dog vendors lined the sidewalks with 4 carts between Micky’s and Revolver leaving fresh puddles of grease along the sidewalk. These photos below taken on Sunday morning.

It is a tale of two trees in front of the BlockParty. On the left is the grease smothered tree that part of West Hollywood’s Names Project Memorial to those who have lost their lives to HIV/Aids. The photo on the right is a neighboring tree that is not smothered in grease. This is what the tourists see in the heart of the Rainbow District. Photos taken on Sunday January 18th, 2026.

Last night it was also reported that WeHo’s street bars were fully operational over the weekend. WEHOonline received a report that patrons in line at Beaches Tropicana were being offered and served drinks from an illegal drink cart on the street without any code enforcement or Sheriff intervention.
I have lived in WeHo before it was a city. It is extremely sad to see what is happening. I visited Boys Town (now the Rainbow District – we must be politically correct) on a weekend night a few years ago and was taken aback by the number of sidewalk vendors. I used to regularly go to the bars when none of this existed. There were no vendors, no harassment, etc. It was bliss compared to this. In the movie “Making Love” a portion of that film was shot on Santa Monica Blvd. at night as the main characters approached… Read more »
Pedestrians are going to have to find a new place to walk safely in West Hollywood because right now our sidewalks are filling up pretty quickly with lots of things that are other than pedestrians!!! If you want to walk, you have to avoid scooters and E bikes (both abandoned and being used illegally,) delivery robots, vendor carts, grease, garbage, human waste, rodents, people with mental issues (who are both conscious, and unconscious,) pickpockets, and vandals! It’s getting pretty crowded and pretty risky out there for those of us who just want to take a walk! We would appreciate it… Read more »
In other news..any word on the transient facility next to the old ihop? Seems now thats been open for awhile – no news. guess the billboard is still producing $$ fo the city so they can care less 😀
also supposedly they do not do drug or alcohol tests for the residents..
Welcome to the Progressive City! Sh*thole that it is! It’s what we voted for! All these political progressive whackjobs and their f*cked up policies. You want better? Vote differently.
Its sad now when you have to basically walk out into traffic to get around someone having an episode and punching the air, or see someone ahead dropping their pants and taking a poop on the sidewalk, or just throwing stuff at people. having to step over or around trash that sits for days on sidewalks, people running red lights/stop signs, graffiti on walls, broken business windows, neighbors yelling at all hours of the night, homeless that make you feel unsafe.. yup and what does the city have ot show for it? high min wage, high rent costs and high… Read more »
100%. I don’t think it can be turned around now.
The ridiculous focus on crosswalks and pronouns…….and calling junkies the “unhoused” (etc etc)…..brought us to this place.
Very true my dear
You morons vote liberal This is what you get
I’m voting fully Republican (except potentially nationally to have some balance). This is after being a lifelong “Democrat.” We need a moderate 3rd party that 70% of the population seems to agree on. Both parties have moved towards the extremes. Unfortunately the extreme right approach seems to make us safer, cleaner and more prosperous.
So what are the Boys Town patrons doing to help curb this out-of-control invasion of the grease carts? Is there any appeal going out at all to the City Manager, City Council & to the folks on the streets who buy the food from the grease carts? Do the people who actually come to the area to relax & patronize the clubs & bars & enjoy the commeraderie & companionship of their friends & neighbors approve of this in-your-face lunacy or can they be asked NOT to buy food from the gtrease carts? After all, I should think that they… Read more »
This lunacy had legislation presented by Councilman Hang, but Councilman Erickson immediately struck it down in a most loud and emotional manner and demanded it be squashed. Turns out Erickson’s new job is representing a Latin Immigration organization. I’m all for immigration and immigrants and ICE can F—k Off, but regarding Erickson who should have recused himself, someone needs to follow the money. None of this is kosher. None of it.
In a show of solidarity with the immigrant community, the County is giving away 280 food vending street carts. You have to question the priorities of our elected officials. Hopefully Danny Hang will re-introduce his item so we can regain control of Santa Monica Blvd.
Yes. I read that. West Hollywood does not qualify for the carts as we’re not part of LA City, but I guarantee you the carts will end up on our sidewalks. Just like second hand smoke, these illegal hotdog vendors have not boundaries and know no barriers.
To all who live and pass through West Hollywood: Please be a better person tomorrow than you were yesterday
California nimby’s had a chance to vote to house the homeless,in hotels, but voted against housing them.Their argument was: They might destroy the hotels, well now they’re destroying neighborhoods, which overwhelms, law enforcement..! If the homeless were taken off of the streets and put into housing, law enforcement, could then, focus on the criminals doing the crimes in residential neighborhoods, but apparently the nimby’s don’t think like that..!
When did you write that comment? In 2007?
Your a Prime example of nimby Jet lag disorder..!
2007 called, they want their tired old “nimby” word back. Come on boomer, you gotta stop living in the past.
Google says: The claim that people stopped using the word “NIMBY” in 2007 is not accurate, which makes you look distorted and delusional, take your meds..!
NIMBY is just a word “Progressives” use to shut down conversations about housing and development that they don’t agree with. It is all rather Trumpian.
You have it backwards. Nimby’s try to shut down housing developments and conversations about housing developments, that they don’t agree with. It’s a insecure, paranoid, mental health condition, that keeps them scared of changing neighborhoods..!
Remarkable that West Hollywood’s LGBTQ leadership has allowed their own community to get so bad.
All of this is 100% true. I live here, it’s a f—kin’ pigsty. Day and night, homeless screaming, panhandling, shitting everywhere. They’ve taken over Weho Park. And the illegal hot dog carts and booze peddlers everywhere. We pay the highest rents, but home owners are leaving. My sister and her wife lived here for 40 years, done; moved to the east coast. The homeless run their city and have more rights than the residents do. That storefronts are paying $15,000.00+ to be in the rainbow district and the city council and sheriff allow this illegal crap to proliferate is unconscionable… Read more »
