The July 7 West Hollywood City Council meeting ignited with raw emotion as residents grappled with the fallout from a July 4 ICE raid at Santa Palm Car Wash, where federal agents detained two workers. The incident’s shock dominated the first hour, prompting the council to fast-track discussion item F.3 focused on support strategies for impacted businesses and the community.
Jonathan Wilson, a local business owner and patron of the car wash, emerged as a vocal leader demanding action.
As someone who’s also a patron, as well as a resident and business owner myself in the city of West Hollywood, I want to say there’s something that needs to be done… I would love for the council to consider the Social Justice Advisory Board as a partner in this.
Highlighting the raid’s chilling effect, Wilson added, “This is shameful… this sows a lot of different fears for business owners as well as community members.”
His sharp quip, “We have ISIS, I mean ICE, BOTH TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS,” drew gasps, underscoring the intensity of the room.
Glenn Rogers, a 45-year veteran employee at Santa Palm Car Wash, fueled the fire with his firsthand account:
I’ve been here for 45 years and on the 4th of July ICE agents supposedly came by the car wash and took two of our guys… these guys are hard working, they’re not criminals… and I’ve never seen people afraid to go to work — just want to do their job.
Lamenting the ongoing raids, Rogers said, “What’s frustrating most of all is that it keeps on going and going and there’s nothing it seemed that we can do about it.”
Calling it a “smash and grab,” he described how “they just come swoop down and that’s it… they run through the car wash and just grab people.”
Rogers warned other business owners, “For all you business people out there just so you know you got to be on guard… because people are afraid.”
Raphael G sharpened the critique, questioning law enforcement’s absence:
How was there no sign of a sheriff when a convoy of GI Joe wannabes, weapons poised, raided a local business? The West Hollywood Sheriff’s inaction does not surprise any of us.
Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers responded decisively, acknowledging the urgency:
I really appreciate the speakers coming out and sharing your experiences… we changed the agenda tonight to ensure that we could have time… to talk about that specifically.
The West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s rare public condemnation this week has amplified the raid’s profile, drawing national attention and local protests. The toll—worker dread, business fragility, and public safety gaps—resonates with broader immigration enforcement debates.
The council’s closed session signals potential legal intervention, with details withheld pending litigation. The raid and its aftermath test West Hollywood’s sanctuary city pledge, demanding swift local response to federal overreach and renewed commitment to community protection.

It is a federal crime for a person or entity to knowingly hire or continue to employ an unauthorized worker.
The feds need to go after the EMPLOYERS!
This is the real James Duke Mason. I have always been strongly against ICE, Trump and anti-immigrant policy. I don’t know who left this comment but they are an impersonator and a fraud.
I didn’t realize there were so many MAGA morons in WeHo. This city is just not what it used to be, and it makes me sad. All these responses supporting this raid, just wait for when they come for YOU. It’s just a matter of time. LOVE THY NEIGHBOR!
It makes me sad to see a once great state turned into a Third World state. Highest taxes, declining standard of living, drug addicts, and the mentally ill wandering our streets, infrastructure in desperate need of repair, taxpayer money going to fund the needs of people who entered the country illegally, and the list goes on and on. What makes me sad are people like you who continue to vote the same way all the while the Democratic Party leans deeper into the ultra, extreme progressive policies. You’ll keep on losing elections except for here in this little bubble Of… Read more »
Most moderate residents here……have just been watching the WH clown show in disbelief for years. The majority of the professional residents (AKA those that pay the taxes) want a major change in direction.
Deporting those in the country illegally is a 80/20 issue. Even in West LA.
It’s great to have such an ineffective mayor in West Hollywood. After maniacal Sepi Shyne and grifting John Erickson, it’s actually a relief.
Illegal is illegal. Or in translation: ilegal es ilegal.
And I’m sure the car wash owner didn’t provide medical insurance or additional benefits (i.e. 401k). All while he made him clean the Mercedes, bmw, and range rovers that he overcharged people for anyways. He just wants 30 years of cheap labor.
Why would the owner pay more than the job is worth? This worker clearly had no more ambition than to stay right where he was for decades, probably making no attempt to do better for himself. It’s pretty much a guarantee that his income was subsidized by public funds because there is no way he could have provided for five children with car wash income.
?????
Shake your fist at the sun all you want. Federal law overrides all. Want it different? Change the law. Duh….
?
It’s the Santa Palm Car Wash. the car name is incorrect throughout the article.
Shouldn’t it say Santa Palm Car Wash for Glenn Roger’s comment?
Taxpayers demand more action!
MORE ICE raids…go after politicians that are pushing this INSURRECTION! Illegal aliens have ZERO rights to be here!!!!
The insurrection took place on January 6th.
Federal law will be enforced. Don’t break the law. You do, and there are consequences.
Illegal aliens STEAL jobs from legal immigrants!
