It’s West Hollywood Day! Marking 41 Years Of Cityhood

The City of West Hollywood was officially incorporated on November 29th, 1984, but this year we will celebrate West Hollywood Day today – November 24th.

“One City, Many Stories,” is the theme for this year’s celebration tonite at the West Hollywood Aquatic and Recreation Center. The party begins at 6pm.

Inside West Hollywood Park the traces at Stories: the AIDS Monument will shimmer light to the sky.   A city born in the early days of the HIV/AIDS crisis had finally brought to life the memories of so many laid to rest who helped to shape the city we love.

Forty-one years ago, in 1984, an unlikely coalition of seniors, renters, and LGBTQ+ activists fought for cityhood to secure rent control and local representation. Those local residents pushed back against the county and won, creating a haven, a place of progressive policies and fierce independence. West Hollywood, a city built on a dream that we are all equal, accepted, and unique.

The “State of the Community” is as fierce today as it was in those early days. A city built on grit, determination, and a refusal to accept the status quo. West Hollywood has become a leader in human rights, a trailblazer in so many areas and continues to set standards that other cities follow.

Our small, young city has grown up. The early years have passed, our adolescence behind us, we have graduated from that little town known as Sherman. Our 41st birthday is coming up this week. West Hollywood is in its prime. Our little city now is the pulse of Los Angeles. West Hollywood has become the political epicenter of Southern California, having elected one of its own to County Supervisor, the County Assessor and soon, very possibly, a State Senator from our little burg.

We have so much to celebrate in our city. Yes, there is more work to do, but we will continue to strive, maintain our values, protect our legacy, and preserve the heritage of those who came before us, who helped create this magical city we call home.

Happy West Hollywood Day,
Happy 41st Birthday to WeHo.

“L.A. CITY W.” is what the CITY engineers named the CITY back in the day; look at the substructure maps […] You know it’s bad when you’re on a field trip at City Hall and the actor said we have to submit a request ONLINE to view the “Articles of incorporation” LIKE HOW DO YOU NOT HAVE A COPY OF THE LEAF. City of Washington has sheets of paper behind glass that date further back than a bicentennial meanwhile Weho has a PC record of the proposal not the MEASURE. Go figure.
