West Hollywood’s Bike Lanes Are Turning Green—Here’s Where and Why

West Hollywood bike lanes are going green.

They’re doing layout first, then the painting. The work started on January 12th and should be done by February 20 unless weather gets in the way.

City Council voted for this back in April with a 5-0 to vote to paint all Class II bike lanes in the city green. The obvious goal is to make the lanes more visible. Drivers see green easier which is supposed to help them determine it’s a bike lane.

Where the Green Paint’s Going

Both sides of Santa Monica Boulevard between Almont and Kings Road are getting the green as is the south side of Santa Monica between Doheny and Almont. Both sides of Fairfax from the northern city limit down to Willoughby will be included and will San Vicente from Santa Monica Boulevard to Beverly Boulevard.

The City worked with consultants from the film industry to determine the exact color. The need was something bright enough for safety but not so bright it would interfere with filming. They landed on a shade that works for both.

Why Green

Studies show colored bike lanes help. Cyclists stay in their lanes better and drivers notice them more. As you know, cities across the country have been doing this for years now.

West Hollywood’s been working on making the city more bike-friendly for a while. The project is part of the Vision Zero plan and the Metro K Line First/Last Mile work. Both are about making it safer to walk and bike in WeHo.

The City’s contractor will keep the work to nighttime hours in an effort to keep it from screwing up daytime traffic.

Questions go to Phillip Ticun at the City. He’s at (323) 848-6345 or pticun@weho.org. For mobility issues contact Tamar Fuhrer at (323) 848-3150 or tfuhrer@weho.gov.

What Happens If You Block a Bike Lane

Drivers who park or drive in West Hollywood’s bike lanes face a $238 fine under California Vehicle Code 21209. That comes with one point on your DMV record.

There are exceptions. You can enter a bike lane to park where it’s legal, to get on or off the road, or to prepare for a turn within 200 feet of an intersection.

This is tone deaf government. People will sit in longer traffic so one person getting exercise could ride their bike?! What about disabled people navigating blocked sidewalks? There is dog pee everywhere. Why should I walk in this? There’s no cops stopping people from running red lights and driving fast, why is riding a bike going to be any safer? All of a sudden there’s going to be Sheriff’s issuing tickets? We defunded them 5 years ago and zombies have been traipsing ups and down the sidewalks since then. People run red lights in front of the sheriffs at Fairfax.… Read more »

This is nice, though it still does not stop cars going into dedicated bike lanes. There still is no barrier between cyclists and cars

I have personally stood by the bike Lanes in Beverly Hills to count the Riders. There is no justification for this. Get a gym membership. Go to a non-urban neighborhood if you want to get your bike ride off. I’m more concerned with all the overgrown vegetation blocking sidewalks coupled with puddles of dog urine and dog poop and zero code enforcement. I, personally, have a disability and cannot ride a bicycle. I can barely walk. If making me suffer through more traffic so one guy could ride his bike once in awhile makes any sense, the world is heading… Read more »

Anyone who rides a bike in the bike lanes is pretty suicidal. It’s all just city officials circle jerking with their twinky-minded nonsense.
