West Hollywood Honors Russian-Speaking Community with Cultural Heritage Month in May

The City of West Hollywood will dedicate the month of May to celebrating the vibrant heritage of its Russian-speaking community, recognizing the diverse traditions brought by immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Throughout the month, a series of events will highlight the cultural history, artistic contributions, and resilience of a community representing over 100 ethnic groups, united by the Russian language.

On Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 12 p.m., the city will commemorate Victory in Europe Day at Fiesta Hall in Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. This event will honor the end of the Nazi regime and remember the approximately 50 million lives lost during World War II. A documentary tribute to Russian-speaking WWII veterans will be followed by a lively dance performance from the Helix Collective, featuring post-war classics by artists such as Count Basie, Irving Berlin, and Edith Piaf. Dance instructor Amy La Wren Ce will lead a brief foxtrot lesson, welcoming participants of all skill levels to join. Admission and parking are free, with no reservations required.

On Saturday, May 10, 2025, the city will host the 19th Annual Russian-Speaking Community Awards Ceremony and Classical Night Concert at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m., at the City’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. The ceremony will celebrate individuals, groups, and initiatives that have significantly contributed to the community. Throughout the month, the Voices of Resilience Art Exhibition will be on display at Long Hall in Plummer Park, running through May 18, 2025. West Hollywood is home to a significant Russian-speaking population, with about 11% of residents tracing their ancestry to regions of the former Soviet Union, which included 15 republics such as Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia. Many settled in the area after escaping discrimination and antisemitism in the 1970s, supported by local programs aiding Jewish immigrants. Since 2001, the city has celebrated Russian-Speaking Community Cultural Heritage Month to honor their enduring traditions in visual arts, performing arts, language, and history.
