West Hollywood is readying to be the first city in Southern California to offer domestic protection rights to polyamorous relationships.
The item F5 introduced by Vice Mayor John Heilman directed city staff to explore expanding the city domestic partnership ordinance to include throuples. “To recognize that there are some people now living in households where they are a throuple (3 people living together as partners). And making sure we address their needs and to provide whatever protection we can for them as a family and for their children,” said Vice Mayor Heilman.
Council member Meister offered the only question on the item during deliberations, asking how this would impact the city’s liability with health care benefits and whether this had been studied?” To which Vice Mayor Heilman replied “the whole point of giving direction to staff and the city attorney was to ask them to bring forward those kind of issues, so I certainly think that needs to be looked at.” “I share your concerns that we do not add any fiscal burden to the city so I’m hoping that as this is looked at that will be one of the considerations that our city attorney and our city staff looks at at.” Meister offered her abstention to wait until city staff returns with the details.
The item passed 4-0 with Meister abstaining. In an unusual display of self-assertion, City Clerk Melissa Crowder then challenged Meister asking ‘may I ask what is the reason for your abstention?’ To which Meister replied that she did not feel she had enough information to make this decision.
Several U.S. cities have taken steps to offer legal protections to polyamorous relationships. Somerville, Massachusetts was the first U.S. city to pass legislation that recognizes and protects people in polyamorous relationship. In California, the cities of Oakland and Berkeley have expanded their legal definition of ‘family’ and ‘domestic partnership’ to include polyamorous relationships.
Polygamy, which involves legal marriage to multiple partners is illegal in the United States.
I oppose this. This is Quadruple erasure!
This is the type of politics that helped Trump get elected and turned moderates off progressive politics. It only serves to reinforce an unhelpful narrative that gay marriage aims to redefine the institution. It will not help further LGBTQ+ civil rights. On the contrary, it will harm them and set the cause back. There are pressing issues in West Hollywood that ought to take precedence such as the loss of so many businesses, homelessness and public safety. This is a pernicious attention-seeking distraction that ultimately will not serve the community. The council would be better served by focusing their efforts… Read more »
If this helped DJT get elected, then most people shouldn’t be allowed to vote…
A secure border, men in women’s sports, lower taxes and government waste are some of the issues that got Trump elected…
The narcissism on the left is astonishing.
Trump was also elected to bring down the national debt, but his big beautiful bill will raise it by $3 trillion! Hence, the stupidity of the right is just as bad as the so-called narcissism of the left. So spare us your MAGA Gay high horse and opinion on who should be allowed to vote.
this is just ridiculous. This is where woke becomes objectionable to me.
What’s next? Protections for Beastiality? “You must accept my Great Dane into your studio apartment because he is my boyfriend, not my pet”?
This is a slap in the face to everyone. I’m saddened that even Lauren Meister would go agree to insult every resident of West Hollywood. Not to mention the theft of our taxpayer money.
Those who said that gay marriage was a slippery slope were right!
The grand designers’ intention is to destroy the entire institution of marriage and anything that stabilizes our social structure.
Yup. So true. And as soon as gay marriage was legalized, this whole trans and gender fluidity thing started to explode. That’s because once gay marriage was won, these organizations that got tons of money for their fight (and in the process, created a lot of high paying jobs within these organizations), they needed the money to keep rolling in, That’s when this whole trans fight was created. I’m gay, supported gay marriage, and I’m married…but our “community” has lost it’s f’ing mind and I now longer feel part of the lgbtq+ community…I consider myself part of the American community….and… Read more »
Very true.
Very well said!
NGOs are nothing more than a slush fund for politicians pet projects and reelection campaigns, so there is no incentive to solve the problem they were hired to do?
So true. Organisation become living things. They fight to stay alive by any means even when they’re over.
Happy to say I never supported Gay marriage…
We claim we’re just like everyone else; however, we don’t behave like everyone else…
Civil unions get the job done…
The enthusiasm to have a ‘wedding’ register for gifts, etc…screams narcissism.
Let’s count the minutes until the city endorses romantic relationship with pets. It’s certainly the next thing on its way – no kidding. Anyone want to guess?
….. or with robots!
That’s about as absurd as this has gotten!
It’s ridiculous nonsense like this that makes DEI a dirty word. Spend your time on something that actually helps WeHo and its citizens and stop wasting time and money on BS.
Giving “throuples” the same rights as gay couples marks the death of the gay movement. I can no longer support gay marriage since it leads to this type of decadence and moral decay.
there many more mixed heterosexual practicing throuples, not counting the Mormons. I would be enlightening to hear how ‘gay marriage’, as opposed to the LDS and polymarriages led to ‘moral decay’. The moral decay isn’t sexual. The love of money is the root of all evil. Money is often the root to everything. It was the basis of Lauren questions regarding the bill. Nothing sexual. I’m grateful my husband and I were able to legally seal up our 37 years (and counting) partnership. We did it for legal protection as much as anything. Either you’re in love or your not.… Read more »
Another step on the road to ending gay marriage rights.
The perverts at City Hall slap residents in the face again. Shame on you Lauren Meister! I thought you would at least have some sense.
“The item passed 4-0 with Meister abstaining”. Didn’t you read the article?
No. No. No. Can’t we tackle the homeless problem (PROBLEM!!!!!!)? WTF? How did we even get here? Gay marriage is in jeopardy and these clowns are creating domestic throuple protections? What a f—king joke. I am so lost with this group of idiots. Do something real for West Hollywood. And one wonders why the Democratic Party is having problems with message and getting elected. I’m a democrat, but this is ridiculous and disgusting.
This is rich. They will do nothing, Nothing,
regarding an out of control slumlord they have known about since 2006. The whole place is corrupt.
