With Southern California in the grip of a late-summer heatwave, the City of West Hollywood is activating its Cooling Center at Plummer Park for residents seeking relief from the sweltering temperatures.
The Cooling Center, located in the Senior Lounge at Plummer Park Community Center (7377 Santa Monica Blvd), will be open:
Tuesday, September 16: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Wednesday, September 17: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The center provides an air-conditioned space for residents who need a break from the heat. City staff will be onsite to assist visitors and direct them to the facility.
Free Cityline Shuttles Available
Need a ride? The City’s Cityline shuttle service offers free, ADA-accessible transportation to Plummer Park. Shuttles run every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For routes and schedules, visit weho.org/cityline.
Staying Safe in High Heat
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health urges everyone to take heat warnings seriously. Temperatures in the region are expected to soar above 90°F, creating a heightened risk for:
Heat exhaustion
Heat cramps
Heat stroke
To stay safe, residents are advised to:
Stay indoors and out of direct sunlight
Avoid strenuous outdoor activity
Drink plenty of water
Wear lightweight, breathable clothing
Protecting Children, Pets, and Paws
The City is reminding residents never to leave children or pets in parked cars, even for a short time. On a 90-degree day, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach 160 degrees in under 10 minutes, even with windows slightly open.
Dog owners should also take care when walking their pets:
Pavement and asphalt can get dangerously hot and burn paws
Use the “7-second test”: Place your hand or bare foot on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet.
Walk pets early in the morning or later in the evening when the ground is cooler
