An off-duty medic was standing outside his home on Norton Avenue when he heard a single gunshot Tuesday — and ran toward it.
NBC4 has obtained new video and an exclusive interview with Christopher Meaders, who stepped in to help the man shot in what the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department described to WEHOonline as a random, unprovoked attack in the middle of the day.
“Once I saw that the guy was leaving the scene and not gonna be standing around with a gun still shooting people, I went over and took care of the patient,” Meaders told NBC4’s Alex Rozier.
Meaders said he happened to have medical equipment on him, including tourniquets. Cell phone video obtained by NBC4 showed him working on the victim at the scene.
“You stopped the bleeding?” Rozier asked.
“Yeah,” Meaders said. “On the right leg — he got shot in the leg, went through and through.”
The victim, who was walking with his wife and infant child when he was shot, is stable. Witnesses told WEHOonline the suspect fled in a white Nissan Altima. No arrest has been made.
Mayor John Heilman told NBC4 the City is still gathering information on both shootings. “We are still trying to gather as much information about both incidents as we can,” Heilman said. “I would ask the community, if they know anything about either incident, to report that information to the sheriff, so that we can find the perpetrators and hold them accountable.”
Law enforcement told NBC4 Investigates there is no known connection between Tuesday’s Norton Avenue shooting and the April 9 shooting of a woman on her balcony on Vista Street — the second random shooting in West Hollywood in less than a week.
Anyone with information is asked to call the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station at (310) 855-8850.
Christopher Meaders, a good human. Thank you. You give us all hope in humanity.
Chris, thanks for being a good neighbor.
