West Hollywood This Week: K-Line Vote Leads a Busy Five Days

A transit vote that could define how people move through West Hollywood for decades tops a busy week. The Metro board decides Thursday on the K-Line Northern Extension route — and the City’s preferred alignment runs directly through the heart of WeHo. Here is what else is happening this week.

1. Monday, March 23 — Sheriff Ticketing Operation

The Sheriff’s Department is running a bike and pedestrian safety operation Monday. Deputies will be out starting early and working into the afternoon.

They will be looking for the violations that show up most on West Hollywood streets — failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, rolling right turns, cutting off cyclists, and blocking crosswalks.

Last year, crash investigations in West Hollywood jumped 30 percent. Pedestrian strikes climbed. DUI-related crashes went up. A full breakdown of what generates a ticket under California law is here: West Hollywood Traffic Laws: What Pedestrians and Cyclists Need to Know.

2. Monday, March 23 — Public Safety Commission Reviews Crash Data Dashboard

The Public Safety Commission is getting its first look tonight at a new Vision Zero crash data dashboard.

The tool pulls together years of collision data and lets users filter by severity, time of day, and whether pedestrians or cyclists were involved. City officials say they want to use it to guide enforcement decisions and identify streets that need physical changes.

The item is on the commission’s agenda as a presentation. The agenda packet is here.

3. Wednesday, March 25 — Fountain Avenue Traffic Signals Going Dark

Signal work starts Wednesday along Fountain Avenue. Crews are replacing controller cabinets at seven intersections between Poinsettia Place and La Brea Avenue.

Work begins March 25 at Poinsettia Place and moves east from there. While crews are on-site at each intersection, signals go dark and the intersection operates as an all-way stop. The City published a full intersection-by-intersection schedule: Fountain Avenue Signal Upgrades: What Drivers Need to Know This Week.

The signal work is one piece of a much larger and more contested conversation about Fountain Avenue’s future. The City approved a streetscape plan in September that would cut the corridor from four travel lanes to two and eliminate more than 200 parking spaces. That fight is ongoing: Fountain Avenue Streetscape Project: The Fight Continues.

4. Thursday, March 26 — K-Line Vote

K-Line | Metro

The Metro board votes Thursday on the K-Line Northern Extension Locally Preferred Alternative — one of the most consequential transit decisions in West Hollywood’s history. The City is pushing for the San Vicente–Fairfax alignment, which would bring rail service directly through the heart of WeHo for the first time.

The full breakdown of what is at stake, who decides, and what happens next is here: All Aboard: The Biggest Transit Vote in West Hollywood History Is Days Away.

5. Saturday, March 28 — “No Kings” Rally

A “No Kings” rally is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, from 11a-1:15p at West Hollywood Park. Councilmembers Meister and Heilman organized the event. Details on the organizers and what’s planned are here: Meister, Heilman Organize ‘No Kings’ West Hollywood Rally for March 28.
