It’s the busiest time of the year in WeHo.
This week West Hollywood will play host to WEHO PRIDE, a once-a-year weekend event in which the City of West Hollywood fronts an estimated 6million dollars upfront to celebrate PRIDE.
The centerpiece? The intersection of Santa Monica Blvd. and San Vicente and our infamous rainbow crosswalks. The rainbow crosswalks were first installed in 2012, and adopted to the new progressive flag in 2022. The symbolic symbol of PRIDE sits at the entrance to the WEHO PRIDE festivities and at heart of the city’s Rainbow District.

According to Helen Collins, Director of Public Works for the City of West Hollywood the crosswalks cannot be re-painted. They are made of a thermoplastic sheet and will be deep cleaned prior WEHO PRIDE weekend.
Skid marks and other forms of tar cause wear and tear over the time. There are no present plans to replace the current thermoplastic for a ‘fresh coat of paint’.

There are barely any rainbow colors on the crosswalk. Just a small piece in the center that looks squeezed in just to say it’s included.
I pointed out in the past that they put the diversity pendants on both sides of the rainbow flag, something NOT seen in any Diversity Flags. This is representing the fact that People of Color and Trans People are currently experiencing a systemic attack on their Civil Rights and, the LGBTQ+ community as a whole is standing by them.
Yes it looks like the beautiful Rainbow Progressive Flag crosswalk could use at least some cleaning up but, a few tire & scuff marks add to its character & purpose. When I post pictures of the Rainbow Progressive Flag crosswalk on social media I have to provide links to prove it’s real because people accuse me of photoshopping the image. A few tire marks completely validates the whole thing.
Was the cost of this monstrosity was over $100,000?????? Get rid of it.
Huge eye sore. Please remove them.
If you really want to be “inclusive,” get rid of that eyesore. Or revert it back to the all-inclusive rainbow flag.
Just another reminder of that mess, Shyne…
With the taxes we pay and the surplus the city has, no idea why we don’t have people power washing our sidewalks daily. Need to clean better.
From the first install it was an ugly design and progressively an ugly mess.
