A West Hollywood cannabis shop, co-owned by comedian Bill Maher and actor Woody Harrelson, was hit by a smash-and-grab burglary early Saturday morning around 4:30 a.m. The dispensary, The Woods WeHo, located on Santa Monica Boulevard, was targeted by a group of five masked individuals dressed in hoodies.
Security footage, posted on Instagram by Elliot Lewis, another local cannabis business owner, captured the thieves pulling up in a vehicle, smashing a glass window, and rushing into the store. They stuffed bags with products and fled within moments. The same crew was recorded breaking into ERBA, a Santa Monica dispensary, the next night, where a security guard fired shots at them. It’s unknown if any burglars were injured.
Lewis, in the video, remarked, “Shots fired… That’s the only way to protect what’s yours in L.A.”
The Woods, launched in 2022 by Harrelson, his wife Laura, Maher, tennis star John McEnroe, and two other partners, boasts a luxurious design and top-tier customer service. Its website highlights premium, organic California-grown cannabis among other products.
West Hollywood, part of Los Angeles County, is patrolled by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. The burglary underscores ongoing challenges for cannabis businesses in the area.

CLEARLY it’s morally & ethically wrong to damage someone’s business to gain entry and steal their merchandise. Please understand we have a highly stressed population desperate for some kind of relief and, businesses owned by wealthy celebrities (likely well insured) taking advantage of this situation, will attract these kinds of problems. The business’s use of deadly force was completely unacceptable given that the perpetrators never posed a threat to human life, just property ❗

Now relax without the assistance of cannabis and, we’re NOT undergoing another French Revolution where your beloved wealthy exploiters are being beheaded, tragically. Yes there is plenty of research showing certain products including drugs & alcohol do attract significantly more trouble. Given the added risk to society, additional responsibilities need to follow when opportunists seek easy profits at everyone else’s expense. Clearly, the ones NOT accountable for their actions are the wealthy business owners. Not only when it comes inherent problems generated from dangerous products but, in this case the excessive use of lethal force where their security fired shots when their or other lives were NOT in danger with numerous escape options.
Note that in California Firearms can only be used within the bounds of reasonable force, meaning Security Officers can ONLY use deadly force (including a firearm) in self-defense or to prevent serious bodily harm or death to themselves or others.
