Bicycles have been a mode of transportation and exercise since the early 19th century when they were invented, but in recent years, high-intensity group cycling classes have become all the rage. An instructor leads the way, pushing you to work hard. Classes are full of sweat, spinning and loud music.

You determine the workout intensity depending on your pedal rate, the adjustable resistance on the cycle’s flywheel and riding position (either seated or standing).

Where to Find It: Be ready to lose a couple of pounds in water weight while spinning at SoulCycle, which can be found west of La Cienega at 8570 Sunset Blvd. You’ll strap in (cycling shoes are required) and get to work in a tight formation with all of your fellow cyclists so that you can “feel each other’s energy.” While the music is fun and upbeat, your fellow cyclists are taking this seriously. Cell phones aren’t allowed, and chatting is discouraged. If you’re ready to work hard, you can sign up for the 45-minute SoulCycle class or the 60-minute SoulSurvivor class. The first class is $15, but single classes are normally $25 with classes available from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Other spin class offerings can be found at Cycle House (624 N La Cienega Blvd. at Melrose), 24 Hour Fitness (8612 Santa Monica Blvd., west of La Cienega), Equinox (8590 Sunset Blvd., west of La Cienega)and soon-to-be Flywheel (8599 Santa Monica Blvd., west of La Cienega), which was formerly the spin classes at Up Dog Yoga.

What You’ll Work: Cycling works the lower body from your hips to your toes. It is mostly about the legs, unless you find a class such as SoulCycle’s SoulBands, which incorporates resistance bands hanging from a sliding track above the bikes to work the upper body. You will also get a great cardio workout. Combined with a quality diet, the pounds could quickly fall off.
