Google is going to give Amazon a run for its money, and soon it will be doing that in West Hollywood.
In a blog post on Google Commerce, Jenna Owens, the general manager of Google Shopping Express, included West Hollywood among the cities the delivery service will cover in the next few months.
“In the Los Angeles area, shoppers in Culver City, Inglewood, Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica, Venice, West Los Angeles, and Westwood can now shop from some of their favorite retailers like Costco, Guitar Center, L’Occitane, Smart & Final, Staples, Target, Toys“R”Us/Babies“R”Us, and Walgreens,” she wrote. “In the coming months, we’ll be expanding delivery to other parts of Los Angeles, Bel-Air, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista and West Hollywood.”
Google is also implementing the delivery service, which has been in effect in the San Francisco Bay area for the past year, in Manhattan on the East Coast. The service allows shoppers to order deliveries from other national chains such as Costco (membership required), Staples, Walgreens and Whole Foods.
Shoppers must sign up on the Google Shopping Express website. (If you’re in West Hollywood, where the service isn’t available as of today, you can add your email address to get notified when it will launch.)
The service will compete with Amazon’s Fresh same-day delivery service. That service includes membership in the Amazon Prime service, which provides two-day delivery for various products ordered on the site and streaming access to movies. Amazon Fresh membership costs $299 a year. The annual membership fee for the Google delivery service is expected to be slightly less with an additional charge of $5 for each delivery, which will be made within a three- to five-hour window. Purchases must be paid using the Google Wallet service.
