Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Wednesday announced his endorsement of West Hollywood City Councilmember John Duran in the race for the L.A. County Board of Supervisors seat now held by Zev Yaroslavsky.

“John Duran is an innovative and thoughtful problem solver with a proven record of delivering results for local neighborhoods,” Garcetti said in a press release. “John isn’t afraid to make the tough choices, and as our next Supervisor, we can count on him to be a watchdog over county government by ensuring we are getting the most from our tax dollars. I’m proud to endorse John Duran for Supervisor and I look forward to working closely with him to continue to move Los Angeles forward.”

Sheila Kuehl and Bobby Shriver are the other leading candidates in the race for the 3rd Supervisor District seat. Early media reports often framed the race as a Kuehl-Shriver contest, with other hopefuls lumped together as afterthoughts. But Duran’s profile has since increased, especially after he garnered an endorsement from the Los Angeles Times.

The 3rd district includes a large portion of the Los Angeles as well as the cities of Agoura Hills, Beverly Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Malibu, San Fernando, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Westlake Village. Numerous unincorporated communities also fall under the district’s purview.

Duran, Kuehl and Shriver recently responded to a WEHOville.com questionnaire that gives overview of their positions.

Hank,
Thanks now I know! Pretty good price actually. Thanks for not having me go looking at campaign statements and for all the rich discussion about the election! Appreciating you and wehoville!

The all important LA Times? Who is reading the Times? — except the political hacks, their cronies and those still subscribing to this third rate newspaper populated by recent grads from journalism school. You can now subscribe annually online to the LA Times for $50. They are desperate. When the Chandlers dumped the newspaper into the hands for the dregs from Chicago – the nail was in the coffin. The Times is a mouthpiece for the politicians and New York developers ruining Los Angeles. As for John Duran, no wonder he was endorsed by Garcetti – they are both in… Read more »

Hank! Thanks for the reply! I do agree that your team has done a great job at shining the light on the money that is a part of our political system in #weho , Which in reality mirrors what is going on in also the national level and all over our country in elections. The citizens united case and the recent other rulings by the high courts have really taken away what I can say in my opinion is some levels of checks and balances that once existed to balance out big money, being big power in our democracy. And… Read more »

Mr. Duran’s campaign is being charged $370, the standard rate for a one-month run of an ad of that size in that position.

There is a new & interesting article on the site http://www.citywatchla.com called “Los Angeles County Supervisor Candidate Scoops Up Billboard Company Cash”, regarding John Duran’s $34,500,00 in contributions from billboard companies in addition to $1,000.00 from one billboard company involved in litigation with the city of L.A. over illegal billboards. Business as usual I suppose

I have to say although I am totally 100% supportive of wehoville and what it brings to the table on weho about local city government topics. I’m starting to get a bit uncomfortable with the constant ad MR Duran has paid for now for his election that sits on the main page of WEHO ville continuously and the multiple post about his election efforts and endorsements that keep being posted. Its clear Hank is on his team by his op/ed about him. Which is fine. Thats how democracy works, one man, one vote and one voice. And also that the… Read more »

Shawn: We’re open to opinion pieces from all of our readers so long as they don’t use profanity, don’t allege unproven illegal or immoral activity (and especially if it isn’t relevant to the piece) and don’t engage in ad hominem attacks — for example, saying a candidate for political office is ugly or overweight when that isn’t relevant to the issue at hand. As an avid reader of WEHOville I’m sure you know we’ve been quite critical of John Duran, especially when it comes to campaign finance issues. But on balance, we feel it would be great for West Hollywood… Read more »

Most people still haven’t figured out the new election system – the top 2 vote getters in this race, irrespective of party, will move on to the November vote. Likely it will be 2 Dems – Shriver, Kuehnl and Duran. Duran is by far the least well known of the three and likely has the least money. But he has the most Dem leadership support and the all important LA Times, so my guess is he makes the top 2. Against Shriver (his name + money) he might be the underdog though in November.

I laughed so hard when I read that Eric Garcetti said “John Duran is an innovative and thoughtful problem solver with a proven record of delivering results for local neighborhoods,”……what a load of crap! I just lost all respect for Garcetti.
