Bold colors. Basic shapes. It’s elementary, my dear. It’s also art.
The cube, diamond and rectangle sculptures on the median of Santa Monica Boulevard’s 8400 block, part of West Hollywood’s Art on the Outside program, will remain on display through June 2015. The geometric installations, called Illumetric, are by L.A. artist Shana Mabari, who worked with Jack Brogran on fabrication and design concepts.
“Through light photons, reflections, memory, and afterimages we process our surroundings and our reactions to them thus illuminating the complexities of our biological composition and human experience,” Mabari said in a city press release.
She doesn’t mean “illuminating” in a solely figurative sense; the sculptures have LED lights so they will glow at night, “emphasizing light as an intangible but physical and communal presence at any hour,” the city says.
Mabari is part of the continuum of the Light and Space movement that originated in California in the 1960s.
I have yet to see the blue dimond fully assembled ( was shipped from our shop in two pieces) so I cant say it looks displeasing or ugly. however it was a serious challenge to build. Im going to have to drive up and see it soon.
Does anyone else think of the SIMS video games when they see this?
i thought it was fun to look at. every piece of art doesn’t need to be the mona lisa.
I try to avoid complaining, especially about art, and I understand liking it or not is subjective, but I have to say I find this installation quite displeasing. It looked really cheap as I drove past it yesterday, and it harkens to some of the ugliest art of the past. I hope it is not permanent.
Wouldn’t this city money be better spent on installing flashing crosswalk lights in the pavement…. so that people…. ya know… wouldn’t die…. rather than putting up “art.” A box with some lights in it is barely art… The artist must have gone to the Dan Flavin Art Institute…. and added a box… Highly creative.
I think you meant GLOW at night…although, growing at night could be interesting!
