The Nov. 4 general election is only a little more than four weeks away. And the deadline for registering to vote in that election is just 10 days away.

Nov. 4 General Election californiaThe election will feature federal, state and local contests for a number of positions affecting West Hollywood. Voters have until Oct. 20 to register, which can be done online.

On the federal level, U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), whose 28th District covers West Hollywood, will face Steve Stokes, an independent candidate who is a real estate and mortgage broker.

Countywide positions such as Sheriff and Assessor (for which West Hollywood City Councilmember Jeffrey Prang is competing with L.A. County Deputy District Attorney John Morris) will be on the ballot, as will the 3rd District seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which includes West Hollywood. Former Santa Monica Mayor Bobby Shriver and former state Senator Sheila Kuehl, both Democrats, are running against one another for that position.

On the state level, Sandra Fluke, a lawyer who is a West Hollywood resident, is running against Ben Allen, also a lawyer and a member of the board of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District for the District 26 state Senate seat, which includes West Hollywood. And incumbent Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) is running against Brad Torgan, a Republican resident of West Hollywood who serves on the city’s Historic Preservation Commission, for re-election to the 50th District state Assembly seat.

Other state contests range from governor to superintendent of public instruction.

The state ballot also will include six propositions covering such issues as the type of sentence levied on someone convicted of a drug and certain other charges to whether doctors should be required to undergo random drug testing.

Wow Mike, I think we might have been too hard on you! 🙂

@ mike dunn: Try to keep the debate civil and pertinent to the topic please, your personal war hero stories are a whole other matter! The vast majority of the country thinks the Viet Nam war was very unjust at the least and, people were right to oppose it. The case of Chelsea Manning http://www.chelseamanning.org/ goes to show that the military experience was not a positive one and, a great deal of homophobia still remains. I have criticized the democrats many times as has all left opposition on several occasions so quit trying to say I’m their shill, you sound… Read more »

To start off with, I did not bring up the subject of gays banned in the military, you did. I only was pointing out you were wrong. I never made personal attacks against anyone but you did. I have tried to remain civil, it’s ashamed others, democrats, have not. And when did I say you were a democratic shill? I agree, the war in Viet Nam was wrong as is any other war. What I do find is democrats tend to say one thing and do the opposite. At least I know where I stand and most Republicans stand on… Read more »

@Mike Dunn

I ALWAYS give the Democrats a hard time (even having worked for them) for betraying progressive values and, I also pick on men for oppressing Women!

Opposing Imperialist wars and the 19th century FAUX news always wins with me 😉

There is always the Green Party or even Socialist Alternative http://www.socialistalternative.org/ as an option if the democrats are selling out, which many times they are.

I guess what I personally observed doesn’t count. What some left wing draft dodger writes about is the truth according you. It’s the democrats who have repeatedly passed laws that are anti gay. And it was the so called anti gay Supreme Court who just ruled that laws prohibiting gay marriage were unconstitutional. But some people with their head in the sand will keep voting for those democrats who will smile and say everything will be OK if you vote for me then saddle the gay community with laws like DADT and DOMA.

Boo Hoo, there mike dunn goes again! You claim to be such a know it all and, you won’t even provide a single source to back what you are saying.Emilija provided links and sources, rethuglican men depend on “because I say so” to be their proof.

If you don’t like WeHo so much mike, you can move to rethuglican Riverside County for about one fifth the price! The WOMEN of West Hollywood won’t miss you!

Here we go again, some right-wingers pretending to be LGBT in West Hollywood trying to push their agenda! First of all the REPUBLICANS are in and represent positions of POWER, it is NOT possible to infringe on their rights. It’s like claiming there is a serious problem with Women raping men. As for the DEMOCRATS when have you seen them really take a courageous stand that opposed right-wing interests? Most of the times they are wimpy apologists for the establishment. The policy, known as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” (DADT) allowed “closeted” members of the military to serve, while prohibiting those… Read more »

Keep burying your head in the sand with these liberals myths. I served during the Viet Nam war and there were openly gay servicemen from enlisted men to officers. Where I was ultimately stationed there were several openly gay couples. DADT was an anti gay measure and caused a record increase in discharges under Clinton. Under President Bush those discharges went down only to increase under Obama. Yes, Obama signed a measure to repeal DADT but that was only after the administration lost their appeal in the Supreme Court. The proof is all to clear. While the democrats claim they… Read more »

Gotta agree with Mike Dunn about many Democrats speaking out of both sides of their mouths in regard to our community. Look at WeHo Council member John Duran endorsing Bobby Shriver over LGBT pioneering former State Senator Sheila Kuehl for Board of Supervisors. I don’t think we have ever seen such a betrayal and sell out.

Boo Hoo, I feel so bad for the republicans, after all their voter suppression efforts they find that they are having problems. Oh thanks for prop 8 and the GOP Gay bashing platform! And you wonder why you are not popular in WeHo? The voter I.D. laws were republican/tea party efforts to suppress Women, minority, LGBTQ and, low income voting. Now I’m off to register more LGBTQ voters in WeHo! To whom it may concern, the republicans are well behind the Greens and Socialist Alternative Party registerations I see in West Hollywood. 😉

So you believe it’s OK to infringe on Republican voter rights but not require verification of others right to vote. By the way, it was a Republican organization that had Bill Clinton’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law which attacked military servicemen’s right to serve declared unconstitutional. Where were the Democrats on this issue. Oh, I remember, the Obama Administration appealed the federal ruling. After DADT was passed discharges sky rocketed to the highest level in history. They declined below pre DADT levels when Bush was President and again went up after Obama entered office. The democrats brought us two of… Read more »

I’ll vote, must drive to my voting place even though there is one one within walking distance from my home. I suspect it’s because I’m a registered Republican. And there are those who complain about Voter I.D.
