The West Basin Municipal Water District today announced an increased incentive for customers to remove grass turf around their property.

DroughtThe water district — which serves residents in Malibu, Rancho Palos Verdes, Carson, West Hollywood and 13 other cities — increased an existing $2-per-square-foot turf removal rebate to $3 per square foot.

The program, funded with a $300,000 grant from the United States Bureau of Reclamation, will only be available for a limited time. The federal grant is expected to cover the removal of 10 acres of lawns and save 20 million gallons of drinking water each year, according to the WBMWD.

People interested in getting rebates must remove at least 250 square
feet of turf. More information about the rebate program is at http://www.SoCalWaterSmart.com, and the water district’s coverage area is shown at http://www.westbasin.org .

I no longer have turf on parkway and other areas because I have not watered for over a year. Therefore I am not eligible because I did the right thing before it was incentivized.
