Marion “Suge” Knight sued singer Chris Brown and the owners of West Hollywood’s 1Oak nightclub today over an incident at a 2014 party hosted by Brown and singer Pia Mia Perez in which the former rap mogul says he was shot numerous times.
The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, naming as defendants Brown, Perez and 1Oak, which is at 9039 Sunset Blvd. near North Wetherly Drive. The suit alleges “premises liability and negligence,” and it seeks unspecified damages. Knight is the co-founder and former CEO of Death Row Records.
A representative for Brown could not be immediately reached.
The suit states that Knight was shot in his abdomen, chest and left forearm the night of Aug 23-24, 2014. The suit alleges Brown “was a known gang associate with a history of violence and had a well-documented track record of hosting events and/or parties in which violence frequently erupted.”
The club, Brown and Perez had an obligation to patrons to provide adequate security, the suit states. Knight had no weapons and did not know that it was permissible for people to come into the club armed, the suit states.
1Oak opened its first location in New York City in 2008. In 2011, 1Oak Las Vegas was the brand’s first expansion followed by an opening in Mexico City. Manhattan’s flagship location and its predecessors have regularly played host to celebrities and athletes, such as Beyonce, Jay-Z, Madonna, Katy Perry, Adam Levine, Fergie, Jessica Alba and Derek Jeter, among others.
The 1Oak New York City location also has been a scene of violence. The New York Daily News reported that in May 2014, club-goers led by Renzo Gracie, the mixed martial arts fighter, were arrested for beating a 1Oak bouncer. In February of that year, model Tyson Beckford was joined at 1Oak by his nephew, Domonic Whilby, who was ejected from the club. Whilby then stole a truck several blocks away and plowed into a city bus nearby, killing the driver. The driver’s
widow sued the club, accusing its staff of serving drinks to Whilby “up and past the point of legal intoxication.”
