EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story erred in calculating the rate of testing by residents of West Hollywood. So far, one of every 53 WeHo residents has been tested for the COVID-19 virus according to the Health Department. The story has been corrected
While the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in West Hollywood continues to grow, the growth rate has slowed dramatically.
As of today, 134 West Hollywood residents have been confirmed to have been infected by the COVID-19 virus, an increase of one from the 133 reported on Monday. But as the chart posted above indicates, the weekly increase in the number of confirmed infections has fallen from 280% during the third week of March to 16.7% this past week.
The reason for the decline is unclear. However, it may indicate that the number of infections is beginning to plateau.
A COVID-19 “surveillance dashboard” launched today by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health indicates that so far two West Hollywood residents have been confirmed to have died of a COVID-19-related illness. To date there have been 1,000 deaths countywide and a total of 20,976 confirmed infections.
The dashboard also shows that 704 West Hollywood residents have been tested for the COVID-19 virus so far. However, the dashboard also notes that the addresses of many of those tested are not available, so the number of West Hollywood residents who have been tested may be higher. If that number is correct, it means that one of every 53 residents has been tested. Those who want to be tested must first go online to see if they qualify and to book an appointment. A testing site adjacent to West Hollywood is on Alden Drive at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
The Health Department dashboard shows that the COVID-19 virus death rate in West Hollywood is 5.41 per 100,000 people, a calculation using the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2018 estimated population of 36,951. The death rate is dramatically higher in the Melrose neighborhood to the south of West Hollywood. Eighteen residents of that neighborhood have died so far of COVID-19-related causes, which is equal of 23.17 of every 100,000. As of today, 313 Melrose residents have been confirmed to be infected.
Four residents of Beverly Hills have died of COVID-19 infections. The city as of today has 105 residents confirmed to be infected. The death rate is 11.59 per 100,000.
Culver City, with 58 confirmed infections, has experienced two deaths, which is the equivalent of 5.02 per 100,000 people. And the Hollywood neighborhood to the east of West Hollywood, which has 182 infections as of today, has had three of its residents die. That is 4.4 per 100,000.
The Health Department reports that 4,507 people who tested positive for COVID-19 (21% of positive cases) have been hospitalized at some point during their illness. “Testing capacity continues to increase in L.A. County, with testing results available for over 133,000 individuals and 14% of people testing positive.”
The Health Department said it has begun investigations at 333 nursing homes, assisted living facilities, shelters, treatment centers, supportive living, and correctional facilities where at least one confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19 has been reported.
“The total confirmed cases in institutional settings is 4,488, including 2,656 residents and 1,832 staff,” the report said. “At last Friday’s press briefing, due to an error in data reporting, incorrect numbers were reported for total cases and cases among residents. Public Health has confirmed 462 residents in institutional settings have died from COVID-19, representing 46% of all deaths. The majority of these people resided in skilled nursing facilities.”
“LA County has hit the tragic milestone of 1,000 people dying from COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health, in an announcement of the latest data… “With over 400 deaths from COVID-19 occurring among nursing home residents, the pandemic has amplified the cracks in our society, including the care and protection of people who are older and medically fragile.
“While managers and staff at all our skilled nursing facilities are doing their very best under difficult circumstances to care for their residents, we are still seeing many cases and deaths among residents and staff in these facilities. We need to accelerate our ability to quickly identify and isolate asymptomatic, as well as symptomatic, residents and staff, and quarantine those who are close contacts.”
The best protection against COVID-19 is to wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, self-isolate if you are sick, practice physical distancing (especially by staying at home) and wear a clean face covering when out in the public procuring or providing essential services. N95 and surgical masks should only be used by healthcare workers, first responders and essential workers providing care for people who are ill.
Essential businesses must provide a cloth face covering for all employees to wear while performing duties that involve contact with other employees and or the public and to post physical distancing plans. The public is required to wear a face covering to enter essential businesses as well. Beaches, trails and trailheads and non-essential businesses remain closed, and all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit remain prohibited.
