As of today, there have been 1,185 newly confirmed COVID-19 infections in Los Angeles County and 19 new deaths, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The Health Department still expects to receive a backlog of data about infections from the state’s electronic lab report system. However, it reports that there is clearly a decline in hospitalizations and deaths related to COVID-19. Currently there are 1,341 people with the virus who are hospitalized, and 33% of these people are in intensive care units. In the last month, daily hospitalizations have decreased by 37% — from 2,219 in mid-July to 1,388 in mid-August. In late July, the average daily reported number of deaths was 43. Now, in mid-August, the Health Department is seeing an average of 30 reported deaths per day.
The Health Department today reports two new confirmed infections among West Hollywood residents, bringing that count to 468. The number of WeHo residents who have died of COVID-19 related illnesses remains at five. In Beverly Hills, the number of confirmed infections has increased by three to 579. The number of COVID-19 related deaths in Beverly Hills remains at 10. In Culver City the number of infections has increased by two to 352. The number of deaths remains at 29.
Hollywood has four newly confirmed infections, bringing its total to date is 980. The number of deaths remains at nine. The Melrose neighborhood has seven new confirmed infections, leaving its total at 1,623. The number of COVID-19 related deaths is 58.

As noted before, one way the virus can be transmitted is through a cough, a sneeze or even through air that comes from the mouth when someone talks. For that reason, residents must wear face coverings when out in public and can be cited for not doing so. The citations come with a $250 fine and a $50 administrative fee.
