Free Rain Barrel Installation Webinar Offered Dec. 5

Southern California hasn’t seen any significant rainfall since April. And we’re overdue! The rainy season usually begins in November, but so far we haven’t had anything other than a quick sprinkle on Nov. 7.

Whenever the first good rainstorm arrives (fingers crossed it’s sooner rather than later), some people will be collecting that rainwater in a rain barrel and then using it to irrigate lawns and gardens, thereby reducing their water bills.

A lot of people installed rain barrels earlier this year as one of the many COVID-induced, stay-at-home, home improvement projects.

For those who are haven’t yet installed a rain barrel, but are considering it, there is a free Zoom webinar being held Saturday, Dec. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon.

Sustainable gardening and landscaping expert Mike Garcia will host the webinar where he’ll offer a step-by-step guide to installation as well as information about rebates for rain barrel purchases. At the end of the presentation, Garcia will also do a live question-and-answer session.

The Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment’s Watershed Protection Program is sponsoring the webinar. The program reports than in an average winter where Southern California typically receives 15 inches of rain, a 1,000 square-foot house has the potential to capture 9,600 gallons of rainwater that flows off the home’s roof.

This will be handy if you have a small yard, front and/or back. The state is still having problems with droughts and the future is not any rosier. If you are handy, this install should take one day to finish.
