COVID-19 hospitalizations in Los Angeles County continue rising at an alarming rate, while ICU capacity continues to plummet.
Some 186 more people were hospitalized on Wednesday than on Tuesday, with a total of 3,299 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19, according to data released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Of those hospitalized, 23% are in the ICU.
Hospitalizations in LA County have increased over 400% in the past five weeks. On Nov. 1, the number of people hospitalized was 791.
The 11-county Southern California region’s availability of ICU beds now stands at 9%, down from 10.1% on Tuesday and 10.9% on Monday.
Because the number of available ICU beds is so low, the state has put the Southern California region under a new Safer at Home lockdown order that started Monday morning at midnight. This lockdown is scheduled to last three weeks, ending on Dec. 28, but could be extended if the COVID numbers don’t come down.
Los Angeles County reported 9,243 new cases on Wednesday, bringing the county to a cumulative total of 475,271 cases since the pandemic began in March.
The county announced 75 more people dead from the coronavirus on Wednesday, pushing the county’s cumulative death toll to exactly 8,075 people.
Some 93% of the people who have died have had underlying health conditions like diabetes, asthma, or heart disease.
A breakdown of those 8,075 deaths by ethnicity shows:
- Latino/Latinx – 52%
- White – 24%
- Asian – 14%
- African-American – 9%
- Other races – 1%
- Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander – less than 1%
More than 3,985,000 people in LA County have been tested for COVID-19 since the pandemic began. The test positivity rate on Wednesday was 12.5%.
West Hollywood saw 11 new cases on Wednesday for a cumulative total of 1,032 cases. There were no new deaths from COVID in the city. WeHo’s cumulative death toll remains at nine deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 11 new cases for a total of 1,139 cases.
- Culver City – 18 new cases for a total of 760 cases.
- Hollywood – 33 new cases for a total of 2,235 cases.
- Melrose neighborhood – 38 new cases for a total of 3,254 cases.
- Miracle Mile – 7 new cases for a total of 347 cases.
- Park La Brea – 6 new cases for a total of 232 cases.
- Santa Monica – 11 new cases for a total of 1,738 cases.
