Los Angeles County is registering one COVID-19-related death every ten minutes as health officials reported the highest-ever single-day total of COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday.
The deaths are the result of a surge in cases that began in November and worsened dramatically after a spate of Thanksgiving holiday gatherings. The numbers like will be exacerbated by Christmas and New Year’s gatherings held in spite of health orders barring them.
County health officials announced 267 more people dead from the coronavirus on Tuesday, pushing the county’s cumulative death toll to 9,722 people. That 267 number is an all-time high for daily deaths, although officials say some of those deaths likely occurred over the Christmas holiday weekend and were delayed in being reported.
As of Tuesday, there are 7,181 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Los Angeles County. That’s 267 more people than were hospitalized on Monday. That also sets a new record for hospitalizations in the county, beating the previous record of 6,914 which was set on Monday.
Of those hospitalized, 20% are in the ICU. That translates to about 1,436 people in the ICU.
The 11-county Southern California region’s ICU bed availability remains at 0%. It first dropped to 0% on Dec. 17 and has remained there ever since. Because of that low ICU bed availability, the state on Tuesday extended its regional stay-at-home lockdown order for an indefinite period of time. Only when the ICU bed availability rises to near 15% will the region’s lockdown order be lifted.
Los Angeles County reported 12,979 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. The county now has a cumulative total of 746,089 cases since the pandemic began in March.
To date, more than 4.65 million people have been tested for the coronavirus since the pandemic began. Of those tested, an average of 15% are testing positive.
West Hollywood recorded 24 new cases on Tuesday, for a cumulative total of 1,392 cases since the pandemic began. The city had no new deaths; the cumulative death total remains at 11 deaths.

- Beverly Hills – 21 new cases for a total of 1,575 cases and a total of 14 deaths.
- Carthay neighborhood – 3 new cases for a total of 582 cases and 1 new death for a total of 27 deaths.
- Culver City – 18 new cases for a total of 1,204 cases and 1 new death for a total of 39 deaths.
- Hollywood – 45 new cases for a total of 3,221 cases and a total of 26 deaths.
- Melrose neighborhood – 76 new cases total of 4,839 cases and 1 new death for a total of 97 deaths.
- Miracle Mile – 9 new cases for a total of 532 cases and a total of 6 deaths.
- Park La Brea – 6 new cases for a total of 339 cases and a total of 1 death.
- Santa Monica – 37 new cases for a total of 2,656 cases and 3 new deaths for a total of 63 deaths.
The Carthay neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles between the Beverly Hills city limits and Fairfax Avenue, with Beverly Boulevard as the northern border and Wilshire Boulevard as the southern border.
The Melrose neighborhood incorporates the areas of Los Angeles east of La Cienega and west of Vermont Avenue, between Santa Monica Boulevard on the north and Beverly Boulevard on the south.
